PostWTF is wrong with FPS games today...
by Jingle Ord The Way » Wed Nov 02, 2011 5:02 pm

In light of the woeful single player campaigns in recent games like Battlefield 3, Homefront, Medal of Honor and the Call of Duty series, it got me thinking about the idiocracy that is permeating throughout the genre. Even simple games of their time like Quake had more gameplay than the recent travesties.
Example -

So is this it? Is this all that I as a fan of the genre have to look forward to now? Any thoughts on the subject?

My dissertation for my degree was about the decline of innovation and general stagnation of the FPS genre, so I share your feelings on this.

Got a 2:1 for it too, so I must have been right :shifty:

Although Ord it's not quite the same as what you mentioned in your OP, i was actually thinking of making a thread today about whether or not folks worry that we'll get to a point where certain genres and stuff simply just run out of new ideas? Like when the new Medal of Honor was teased/announced it instantly had me thinking, with the amount of war games on the market at the moment what can that do differently in it's campaign from the likes of your COD's and Battlefields.

In all , it'll do nothing new. I found it weird that Rage got criticised for being a FPS post apocalyptic game like Borderlands and the Fallout games yet nobody mentions anything about the glut of military FPS games out there.
I know this is an old image -

But after replaying a bit of Black Ops, Homefront and Battlefield 3, it really is no longer a joke. That image is actually a true representation of the current scene and that depresses the hell out of me.

You can apply this to most games and genres today sadly.

You have consoles to thank for that.

Well not really, consoles have been around for over thirty years. What you have to thank is the expanded audience, the ones who are dictating where the money goes. The ones who won't be playing/buying more than a couple of games a year and this audience exists on both PC and consoles.

I dont think you're right there. It exists on the PC in as much as people use facebook on it. The generally higher buy in for a desktop results in a smaller pool of players and that is the reason they are a much quieter voice. Quieter might not be the best way to describe as everyone knows PC people tend to whine the loudest when gooseberry fool aint right, and lets be honest, who wants to make games for a small audience who will moan at you anyway?

Well all this is a trade off. Exploration tends to be minimised now in favour of cinematic and pacing of the action. That big open FPS level, it wasn't 'all' accessible was it? ;) You'd go through the only door you could and follow a linear path to get a coloured keycard, then backtrack all the way through the level, unlock the door and repeat. Sometimes even backtracking multiple times with a whole gay rainbow of keycards.

That small audience exists on console too. I want bigger games with hundreds of hours of content. So it's not consoles fault, but the fact people are spending money on these more casual game types means it's the audience fault.

Call of Duty is a PC franchise. Or at least it started out as one, and the most popular fps on consoles is Halo and it's not like that example at all.

Call of Duty stopped being a PC franchise after 2. Halo also introduced a lot of things which simplified a bunch of FPS elements.

And they repay us by only releasing the best editions of their newest games on consoles and saying "strawberry float you" to the PC gamers that made them a success to begin with.

So if Call of Duty remained a PC exclusive it wouldn't have remained the same type of game it still is today? You have no way of knowing one way or the other.

Im not blaming anyone. Im saying that the larger and more casual audience has removed a lot of the more hardcore elements of classic fps games.

Is that a bad thing? I dunno. I do know that there are a lot of things that I did and didnt like which are gone and a lot of things I do and dont like which have been added.

I think making these games more accessible is a good thing, but I'd also agree that we shouldn't be ramming tutorials down the throats of seasoned gamers .If I ever make a FPS I'll keep this in mind ;)
