I am finding that it's very grindy, but I'm enjoying it too.

Got a couple of windfall bounties (a 50k and 100k one after another), upgraded my ship with scanning equipment and am now doing the Road to Riches ( https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous ... un_riches/ ) which should net me 10 or so million creds. After that, who knows...

Oh no doubt, that's why I'm putting off buying Horizons. I reckon I'll end up the same as your brer, 15-20 hours tops, then done.

I'd say that's a fair shout of how much you'll get out of it. I think I've put about that in.

It's a shame, it should be a game you can just endlessly play but it isn't long before you start to see behind the curtain and realise there's not much to do.

Flying a ship closely around docks and space stations never gets old though.

It's stuff like this that I enjoyed, walking around the cockpit, flying around bases etc. I'll probably put it on every now and then just to fly around for a bit and drive a rover through a crater, but I doubt I'll put much heavy time in to it again.

This game has an incredible potential to infuriate. I'm doing the Road to Riches plan (going through system, scanning stuff for money) so bought some advanced scanner equipment, selling my own stuff. I get halfway across the strawberry floating galaxy to start, only to release you need the old scanner for the new scanner to work. It tells you this exactly nowhere. So, I set course for the nearest station, buy back the old scanner, set out again. Get to the first stop, done.

Next stop, I accidentally supercruise too close to a sun while fuel scooping. Drive goes offline, and no matter how much I steam away from the sun under normal thrust, the heat increases and I die. This means I've lost all the data I previously collected, which took me a good hour. Oh, and it cost me 30k to get my ship back.

Fun.

Yes it really doesn't respect your time.

I lost a few million credits worth of exploration data that I'd been sitting on for an exploration community goal to come along from a random pirate attack.
I rage quit and haven't been back to the game since.

I don't get why you need to lose exploration data at all. You can easily explain away in game that it got backed up the last station you docked at or it's backed up to your escape pod or something.

Welp, that was a strawberry floating rollercoaster.

After my initial misstep, I spent bloody ages following a route I found online. All was well, but the last leg seemed to be a wasted opportunity: a multi-jump route back to a home base with no further scanning. I thought this was a bit rubbish, so using the RtR app ( http://edtools.ddns.net/expl.php ) I plotted a more profitable route. Only, I forgot to check if there were enough scoopable stars...

Cue to me running out of fuel. I was mortified. BUT, after reading about the game a bit I found The Fuel Rats team. Literally within 5 minutes of me putting a refuel request in on their IRC channel I was refuelled and ready to go. I then had a long chat with my saviour about the galaxy map and what my long term goals in the game were. It was perhaps the nicest in-game interaction I've ever had with a complete stranger. He suggested I join the Fuel Rats, if I wanted to, and gave me some ship/equipment suggestions.

After that I made it back to a station and am now sitting on a 13 million cred motherlode :D

I like this game.

The community are really nice. I got a bunch of tips streaming on the GR channel with the title elite noob or something.

Upgraded all the way to an Asp Explorer. Going to start doing bulk trade runs so hopefully I can earn a couple of mill an hour, or something along those lines

Did bulk of my play through in the ASP. Then decided I wanted more exciting journey sontraded for a vulture, then I stalled after a few bad fights went wrong and sort of lost interest. Scanning, exploring and courier missions in the ASP were great, a real jack of all ship with huge FSD range.

Yeah, I'm really liking it. According to the speed run guide I'm following I should be updating to a Type 7 at this point but trade missions are getting a little dull now (there's only so much slave trading one can do) so I'm going to keep the Asp and buy some passenger cabins, make a move into ferrying people that want to be ferried.

My next purchase will be a Python I think, when I've got around 70 million.

Looks like I was wrong about getting bored with this. I'm currently 50 hours in, piloting a Type 7 Transport with 60 million in the bank.

I don't know why I find it so addictive. I spent the last few sessions being a space trucker and loving it. I found a profitable single jump trade loop, had Netflix on in the background and found the to-ing and fro-ing just incredibly relaxing (and my bank account going up very satisfying). I set myself the goal of buying an Anaconda so once I reach that who knows, maybe I'll get bored.

Going out on a limb today and switching to passenger missions. Found a guide that reckons you can make 50-200 million an hour in a Type 7, and if that's true I should have my Conda by this afternoon but I've been fooled before. Jetted across the galaxy to do some recommended Empire reputation missions only to find they'd been removed. The passenger guide was made on the 8th January though so, fingers crossed.

Can you link to that passenger guide?

I'm in an Asp Explorer at the moment but an Anaconda was the goal.

Normally even the suggestion of using a guide in a free roaming game would have me vomiting blood, but having played probably 20 hours or so of this and got precisely nowhere, I can see it being almost required. I think in all the time I've played the most money I've had TOTAL is 1 million.

Okey doke so the two main guides are these:

https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteTraders/c ... conda_v20/

This is the overall guide I've been following. It's not perfect, but is about as close to a consistent speed run as you'll find

https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous ... un_riches/

This is one led to me making 12 mill in my Sidewinder in 4 hours through exploration.

AND:

https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous ... ed_by_the/

This is the 50-200 mill guide I'll be following today. Like I say, I've no idea if it's current but it was made a few weeks back so hopefully. It also includes some game janking (logging in and out of the client to increase the number of missions you can grab at once). I'll report back if it's still worth it.

I've honestly done as much reading as playing with this game, but for some reason I love it.

Taf, you sharing your Elite adventures tempted me back into the galaxy over the weekend, and it was like slipping back into a much-loved pilot's chair

I was surprised how quickly I remembered all the controls, landing was still second-nature and I just knew what I was doing pretty much straight away. Managed to make a cool million just doing the low-level cargo stuff, but do want to try some of the more lucrative (non-combat) revenue streams.

Love it :toot:

If I ever resubscribe to PS+ I would be more than happy to have a GRcade space meet and meat.

I have no idea how to make use of any of the player interaction functions.

I didn't even realise there were any, I figured we'd all just be posting on here trying to co-ordinate loitering outside a space station
