While we are all excited about No Man's Sky, let's not forget this bad boy is on the horizon.

A Single Player Alpha launched today and it's looked pretty swish.

Looks great. I kind of like some elements of this game more than Star Citizen.

This, SC and No Man's Sky should just combine to make the perfect game.

Glad that got backed and it's also looking really good. I haven't played a space sim game in years.

That looks so cool. I'm gonna have to get a graphics card if this doesn't get ported to ps4. :fp:

Watched a few of the alpha vids earlier. Looks amazing, exactly how I expected it to be. Love the artwork and style.

As a iMac user, will have to wait longer to play it than the PC crowd :(

Looks Awesome. This with Oculus I reckon will be a winner.

Do we know if you can land on planets in this one ala Frontier 2? (i.e actually fly through the atmosphere)

Not initially. I think they would like to implement that at some stage though.

The hyperdrive system in this game is amazing, it counts you down and everything

Planet landing is definitely coming in one of the expansions. You'll also be able to walk around your ships, board other ships and so on. They just being sensible with the initial release, but it's going to keep growing.

How about Elite: Dangerous on PS4 and Xbox One? - "We would be stupid not to," says Braben.

Space game Elite: Dangerous is confirmed for PC and Mac. But will it ever come to console?

Frontier chief David Braben indicated that Elite will one day come to console - specifically PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - at the Develop conference last week. In fact, he told Eurogamer in an interview "we would be stupid not to".

"I've just got to watch out," he smiled. "I don't want to do something that constitutes an announcement, but we would be stupid not to support other platforms, including console."

Elite: Dangerous, Braben pointed out, is built using the same engine Frontier used to create Xbox One launch title Zoo Tycoon.

"We've done lots and lots of games over time," he said. "We've done first-party Sony games. We've done first party Microsoft games. On console. So yes, we'd be stupid not to think about it.

"But the point is, we're very focused on delivering a great PC game. We will then do the game on Mac and during that time we will be looking at other platforms as well.

"We're a public company and announcements have to be properly made. But it's obviously something we're bearing in mind."

Braben said he was convinced both the PS4 and the Xbox One were capable of realising Frontier's vision for Elite: Dangerous, which has been built to run on a wide variety of PCs.

"The PC is a funny platform," he said. "It's not really a platform. It's a whole range of platforms flying in loose formation.

"You compare a laptop with an uber dev PC, with someone's PC which has had such a lot of rubbish installed on it that it's got all sorts of broken drivers, and the game is expected to run on each of those. There is so much variation. So it's really hard to put on the outside of a box what the minimum spec is.

"We're putting a lot of effort in to put in a lot of controls so the player has control over what's coming out. We're going through some wonderful effects internally that look truly beautiful, and we're saying, that slows the frame rate a bit, doesn't it? And we say yes, but we don't mind, because it looks so beautiful. But what we're going to do is attach it to this part of the detail slider. Or we'll call it out as a tick box.

"One of the beauties with console is we can then hand tune it to be just right. This is why we put all these options in."

Elite: Dangerous also supports virtual reality headset the Oculus Rift - and Braben pointed out that the PS4 has its own VR headset, Project Morpheus.

Whatever the case, Elite: Dangerous is unlikely to launch on console this year. Frontier's launch plan involved releasing on PC during the 2014 calendar year (the beta launches at the end of July). Then a Mac version will be released approximately three months later. Perhaps we will see Elite: Dangerous on console at some point in 2015.

MY, that does look pretty - very pretty indeed... certainly better looking than No Man Sky's more muted colour palette.

Planet-landing patched in later, you say? I'm not sure, but I think that might be a deal-breaker for me, depending on which comes first out of this and NMS, since I don't think I'll have time to have both on the go.

Which does everyone think will be better, or are they too completely different for comparison?

I certainly don't think they're 'too different' for comparison at all.

I do wonder if NMS will be more at home on the PS4, being, as it is, built from the ground up for the console. Elite is being built for PCs, though, and maybe eventually ported across and will likely suffer in the process.

I suspect Elite will be the better game, personally, but I'm excited by the prospect of a game such as NMS on a home console.

So with the new trailer for this confirming there are 400 Billion star systems, it will be interesting to see if No man Sky really is the biggest game ever made. Maybe some of us can try and map out each game in square meters to see once and for all.

If anything they're just on the right side of garish. Except the last one, obviously.

Dunno which will be better but I prefer the SF book of old look NMS has to the realism of Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen.

Same here, along with the expansion pass. I have a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X which is a pretty great stick/throttle setup if you don't want to spend too much. I'd love an X55, but I really can't see it being £300 better.

I've paid out for VoiceAttack too, which is brilliant if you don't want to learn too many button shortcuts. I'm planning on playing with the Oculus Rift, and figured it would solve the problem of hunting around for buttons I can't see. Even without the rift, it feels awesome to be able to manage power, targeting and stuff with voice commands. It suits the game so well!
