PostElite: Dangerous
by Octoroc » Tue Nov 06, 2012 8:26 am

The BBC wrote:Classic video game Elite is getting a 21st Century makeover.

David Braben, one of the creators of the original, is seeking £1.25m ($2m) via Kickstarter to fund the updated version.

Called Elite: Dangerous it will involve the same mix of interstellar travel, trading, piracy and spaceships as the original 8-bit game.

That should make a lot of people happy.

Maybe he should have a root around the back of the sofa and see if he can dig up that old Elite 4 code that he's been working on for the past 3 decades.

He might find a few quid too. I found a Mr Men book behind our sofa last night. It was fiercely guarded by a fluff monster.

Holy gooseberry fool! :D

Now this is a great use of Kickstarter. I remember him in Edge promising the game for next-gen systems the PS2 and original Xbox. And then there was meant to be a separate MMOG. I will pledge now and hopefully there are some great stretch goals and versions for Mac/Xbox/PS3. Nice find Octoroc!

Now this, I will happily buy. Can't back at the moment though, due to a chronic lack of funds.

Something tells me that he could have just put it up with the words

"Next Elite, need 1.2 mill."

and he would get it.

I have noticed that someone has done the max pledge already.

I dont know why, but that sounds strawberry floating incredible.

Want so much. I only ever played Frontier: Elite 2, but lost a summer to it.

Mainly used to rape Cemiess for the bug that gave you loads of cash.

Would be pretty awesome to have an entire star system named after you. £5,000 is a bargain for such immortality.

And the option to have dinner with Braben which in turn gives you the chance to slap him and demand answers on why it has taken so damned long.

£1.25m does seem anywhere near enough to cover what they are hoping to do (from the description on the kickstarter page).

Hmm, my immediate response is "strawberry float off, Braben". But then it was allegedy the involvement of GameTek that made Elite II (and First Encounters) such a fiasco.

Surely something like this doesn't have to be kickstarted, though? Are Frontier really so stony broke that they can't fund and develop it without going cap in hand to a publisher?

Why risk funding a development cycle yourself when you can crowd fund it? Easy peasy.

In that case I return to my initial response of "strawberry float off, Braben".

I'm a little disappointed that it's not a Raspberry Pi exclusive.

Robert Florence has gone off on one about this.

https://twitter.com/robertflorence

I'm David Braben. Remember Elite? Give me a million pounds.

It's the arrogance of Braben's pitch that is annoying me. No detail. It is PURELY "Hi, remember Elite? Give me money."

Here's a respectful Kickstarter pitch, helping a small team make a cool game. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/149 ... ing-hunted … strawberry float ELITE.

Braben talks for over a decade about doing a new Elite. He only does it when we mugs take the financial risk. NEW AGE gooseberry fool.
