You really need to watch a video on how to do it. The tutorial sucks. I had to do it three times before I got it.

I thought I'd try my hand at blagging a free copy of this and ended up being given a VIP copy :datass:

Just need to get a HOTAS now, gonna take a few from work and try them out before I buy one.

This is from the latest E:D email Newsletter:

Massive Effect

It’s a big galaxy out there. Players have been out exploring Elite: Dangerous’ full-scale recreation of the Milky Way since launch, and together you’ve discovered 615,475 previously uncharted systems of the 400 billion in our galaxy.

On a simple average, that’s 17,585 systems per day, 732 per hour or 12 per minute. Good going, everyone.

But let’s put that in context, because with 400 billion star systems to explore the community have charted just 0.00015 percent of our galaxy. Let’s put it another way: if everyone keeps going at the current rate, it will take 150,895 years to map the entire Milky Way.

But with new players joining every day, we might just get the galaxy mapped before the turn of the hundred and seventieth century.

I had no idea the universe in the game was so unimaginably big.

Borrowed a X55 pro for the weekend, not played the game yet (don't even know if my Mac will run it actually :shifty: ) but I'm going to start on Sunday morning, so keen.

Bloody hell this is tricky :dread:

Spent about 2 hours leaving a station, getting lost in hyperspace, overshooting places (despite knowing what to do) then finally getting to my destination only to find I'd gone back to my starting point :fp: :fp: :fp:

The X55 is great, although you'll need some way to secure it in place really. I got myself an expensive but awesome Wheel Stand Pro stand, but you could probably just pick up some rubber suckers or something. I was using blu-tack to start with. :shifty:

The X-52 would be fine for the game though, and indeed the in-game sticks are modelled on it. You don't get the cool metal toggles and stuff, but it does the job. I was using a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X before the X55, which cost me £30 and worked really well. You'd need to set a button as a shift control to make up for having less buttons, but that's no big deal. You can easily use it on your lap too.

I played this through my Rift for the first time in a while yesterday, and I'd forgotten just how staggering it all looks. I treated myself to a bit of sightseeing around the Sol system, and seeing the full scale of Jupiter was pretty incredible. Combat is so much better with the Rift too, as you can easily track enemy ships above and to your sides. I found using my POV stick for this a bit too clunky and unnatural. When the final Rift turns up and everything looks sharp again, this is going to be utterly mindblowing.

Had a really good session just now, got to grips with navigation and finally did a couple of minor jobs like transporting leather :datass:

Here's my setup with the lights on so you can see it:

And here's it with the lights off how i'm playing, notice i've matched the HUD colour with the keyboard backlighting, thus bathing the bottom of the screen in dat orange :datass:
Image

It's a 27" imac running windows 7 on bootcamp, so it's a bit out of date hardware wise (crap on board graphics card) but the i7 quad core makes up for it. The X52 pro is really great for this game, you can tell it was made around it, everything just feels perfect. I wanted a X55 because you can change the spring tension on that, but the military styling isnt really my thing, and the X52 pro feels really space like, all futuristic, just spot on for the role playing aspect. Also, the safe red buttonsheild goes from a green light to a red one when you flick it up to arm the weapons, which is a brilliant touch :datass:

So yeah I think i'm going to order a X52 pro this week (i'm borrowing this one) and maybe look at a more permanent way to mount the stick and throttle, one of those things that looks like an office chair but has hard mounts on the side would be amazing.

The Pro is basically the same but with higher quality components. Much more metal in place of plastic parts. Whether that's worth the extra is down to you really, but I've seen lots of people say the Pro is a big improvement.

The X-55 is awesome too, but probably overkill if you just want it for Elite and doesn't come with any way to secure itself so there's going to be some additional expense there. I do love it though, and all its lovely switches.

Of course if money is no object you can always treat yourself to a Warthog and yaw pedal setup. ;)

Can't speak of the x52 v pro but I expect the standard 52 would be fine for you.

I am thinking of getting this, been watching a lot of gameplay videos on youtube.

Question - can it be played easily with mouse & keyboard or does it also support gamepads? I don't want to have to invest in a joystick and would love to be able to play it with my Dualshock...

From what I've heard a Joystick is the optimal way to play. But I've been using a 360 pad and once you get used to that it's fine. Not had any issues at all.

M&KB should be avoided like the plague apparently.

Im getting nowhere fast in this. I the total time I've been playing it Ive amassed the fortune of:
15k :slol: :fp:

Got knocked out of hyperspace by the AI and couldn't find the escape vector so I had to fight or die, ,U first fight in the game. Luckily I'm quite good at manoeuvring (dat hotas) so I actually killed the strawberry floater despite my starter ship and gear. Felt like this:

Ok so that went well

First attempt with my DualShock4.....managed to launch from this station, accidentally deployed my hard-points and ended up shooting the station repeatedly as I tried to figure out which button retracted them. Instant bounty, dead.

Managed to do this 2 more times

Finally got the controls sorted out, (downloaded DS4Windows which makes things much easier, I think it's basically a 360-controller emulator) and managed to compete my first bit of cargo hauling. Really love the look and feel of the game and how you access the menus in the ship. With the DS4 the trackpad actually works so I use that to look around my cockpit and access the ship systems, although I can also use the right analog stick to do this if I wish. Still ironing out the kinks, for example I don't know how to exit super cruise using the controller, only way I've managed it is to switch off my hyperdrive (or whatever it's called) mid-cruise which brings me to a violent stop, probably not too good for the ship :slol:

I think a combination of controller and keyboard will end up suiting me best.

So yeah, onwards and upwards :D

I deactivated my frame shift drive Mid flight by accident as I was browsing throught that panel. The first thing that happend was a massive bang, followed by a flat spin and me just wondering what the strawberry float just happened  The throttle did nothing and I thought my HOTAS had Uncalibrated or something.

Speaking of which, I know they're expensive but I can't recommend a hotas enough. It really feels like you're piloting something and I often find myself sitting up to shift my weight around when landing as I'm so into it.
