It's the overall detrimental effect to society of having this shite on the box at prime time, it's too easy for the great unwashed to put their feet up on their faux-leather sofas (with their trainers still on), spark up a fag and tuck into their ASDA curry with a pint of Stella to wash it down with.

Scum, subhuman scum.

Ugh, unnecessary use of a double "with".

Clearly an Ant & Dec watching, "Get Me Out of This Saturday Night X-Factor Celebrity Wipeout In a Jungle", unwashed pleb. :P

EDIT: Also, I'm sure Ant & Dec are fairly decent human beings, but I agree with the general thrust of this thread that TV is (and to a degree always has been) full of lowest common denominator shite.

There is nothing wrong with a bit of trash TV. Not everything has to be intellectually worthy and sometimes you just want to flake out in front of the TV watching entertaining rubbish.

The problem is that the main TV stations are full of trash TV. Especially on a Saturday night, there is rarely anything worth watching on the 5 main channels.

Which is not a problem for me, I have Netflix, Amazon Prime and video games, but it is not unreasonable to think that the main stations should show something other than singing (not counting DML’s show ;) )or lowest common denominator shite.

It's ITV, everything they show every night is trash.

I don't watch ITV out of principle. It is a gooseberry fool channel, with terrible hosts and all the wrong kinds of shows.

I'd love to know what you guys would put on your ideal Saturday night.

I think half the problem is that Saturday nights needs to be 'event' TV for people to tune in. You only need to see weeks where the run a Bond/Harry Potter film etc to see how much the ratings drop. They'd be dead in the water if they put loads of dramas on.

Nothing with "celebrities" in, for a start. I am sick to the back strawberry floating teeth of seeing all these wannabe z-listers desperately clinging onto their long-expired 15 minutes because the crippling fear of having to get a regular job and return to being a nobody like the rest of us is too awful to contemplate.

I think we all know what people don't like in here, completely understandable.

Hey don't worry about offending me or anything, just see if you can give me a rough schedule of what you would want on a Saturday night which importantly would still get a fair few viewers.

I'm genuinely interested what people suggest.

Isn't broadcast TV on the decline while the use of streaming is growing?

I couldn't imagine spending an evening watching ITV (unless ITV4 are showing the Running Man or something).

I don't know the figures, but I would imagine so. Even my mother has Netflix now, if she is using a streaming service, then I imagine everyone is.

The only trouble is that I don't care about a show getting more viewers, I only care about what I want to watch, so my schedule will be skewed in that direction, which probably makes it unrealistic. But I'll give it a go:

6pm - review show of videogames & movies
6.30pm - nostalgia film - mid-80s to mid-90s
8pm - live sport, preferably football but I'd also accept pole dancing competitions
10pm - smut

It's a struggle, I'll admit it.

If we are just counting the 5 main channels, then surely there should be something for everyone?

What’s the difference in viewing figures between trashy Saturday night (singing shows and Ant & Dec) and the more intellectual Sunday night (Planet Earth 2 and costume dramas on ITV)?

I guess the ideal Saturday night would have something for everyone. Have sport/movies on BBC1, quality documentaries on BBC2, singing/game shows on ITV, live music concerts on Channel 4 and tits on Channel 5. Obviously the channels would never work together like that and I would probably still watch Netflix, but you asked for the ideal… ;)

Yeah I can't really remember the last time I actually watched broadcast TV on a Saturday night.

In all honesty if you exclude news and live sports coverage I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've watched something that isn't streaming over the last few years.

Noel’s House Party was and is brilliant. Anyone who wants to challenge that with ‘rose tinted’ whatever can take a running jump. So much of that show was genius - in a celebrity-obsessed culture it proceeded to completely and utterly humiliate one on a weekly basis in its Gotcha segment, which was again awesome.
