The problem is that the main TV stations are full of trash TV. Especially on a Saturday night, there is rarely anything worth watching on the 5 main channels.

Which is not a problem for me, I have Netflix, Amazon Prime and video games, but it is not unreasonable to think that the main stations should show something other than singing (not counting DML’s show ;) )or lowest common denominator shite.

Isn't broadcast TV on the decline while the use of streaming is growing?

I couldn't imagine spending an evening watching ITV (unless ITV4 are showing the Running Man or something).

This is a little bit of a common misnomer.

TV audiences are going down - but thats because there is more choice. We watch no less live television than we did 50 years ago, the only difference is there are many more channels. I've seen a study on this and its honestly a straight line, no decline at all.

Of course that brings its own issues. Lowering budgets and more choice make it harder to make money and high quality television all the time.

People are moving to streaming, but use is way lower than you think. The majority of people still don't stream, I think we are a good decade off being in a place where streaming is more used than not. Models like Netflix seem to make a lot of money, but actually probably don't.

Basically there is an awful lot of older people keeping TV a thing, and even when there isn't I'm still pretty convinced a main stream channel of live entertainment will be wanted.

Hey don't worry about offending me or anything, just see if you can give me a rough schedule of what you would want on a Saturday night which importantly would still get a fair few viewers.

I'm genuinely interested what people suggest.

The only trouble is that I don't care about a show getting more viewers, I only care about what I want to watch, so my schedule will be skewed in that direction, which probably makes it unrealistic. But I'll give it a go:

6pm - review show of videogames & movies
6.30pm - nostalgia film - mid-80s to mid-90s
8pm - live sport, preferably football but I'd also accept pole dancing competitions
10pm - smut

It's a struggle, I'll admit it.

It is a tough nut to crack I'll admit.

I think half the problem is that Saturday nights needs to be 'event' TV for people to tune in. You only need to see weeks where the run a Bond/Harry Potter film etc to see how much the ratings drop. They'd be dead in the water if they put loads of dramas on.

If we are just counting the 5 main channels, then surely there should be something for everyone?

What’s the difference in viewing figures between trashy Saturday night (singing shows and Ant & Dec) and the more intellectual Sunday night (Planet Earth 2 and costume dramas on ITV)?

I guess the ideal Saturday night would have something for everyone. Have sport/movies on BBC1, quality documentaries on BBC2, singing/game shows on ITV, live music concerts on Channel 4 and tits on Channel 5. Obviously the channels would never work together like that and I would probably still watch Netflix, but you asked for the ideal… ;)

I think channels working together more to provide more diverse content is a good idea long term, but a bad idea short term. If they could get through the short term...

I think the difference is people do naturally want to chill out/get ready for a night out on a Saturday and probably wouldn't want to watch Planet Earth in great numbers on that day. Scheduling is king as I'm sure Gario knows.

I genuinely don't know what I would replace it with. I freely admit I'm a TV snob and that light-entertainment shows (And anything on ITV) bore the living gooseberry fool out of me, but not everything needs to be for me.

Ideally I'd want some good movies, well crafted dramas etc. But that's not gonna cut it unfortunately.

Ultimately I stream/download 99% of what I watch these days, so I can avoid all the trash and instead concentrate on shows that interest me.

I used to watch Supermarket Sweep when i was a bored teenager stuck at home (when not hiding from the truant officer, but that's a different story), i also used to watch Teletubbies which was usually on at around the same time.

Bring back Paul Daniels! That was good Saturday night TV.

Edit: On a more relevant point. Back then shows could be just about entertaining the viewer, but now they have to be a competition, or have some gimmick.

Penn & Teller's Fool Us was originally planned as a simple showcase for new magicians that hadn't been on TV, but the show only got made because they added in the "guess how we did it" gimmick to make it more competitive like X Factor.

It actually works in it's favour for this show as it forces magicians to show off their best tricks, but I'm not keen on the idea that you can't just have straightforward entertainment without a gimmick.

I really enjoyed Ant and Dec's two great shows, Takeaway and Jungle. Great for switching your brain off and watching after a busy day or whatever. I'm genuinely miffed that this is now basically over.

With unfortunate timing, ITV are airing a Fast and Furious film Saturday night.

Followed on Sunday by "Mrs Brown's Buouys". The indomitable Mrs B provides a fascinating insight into the history of anchored floatation devices.
