Can you home brew cider? I'd fancy giving that a go.

I was looking at one of these the other day. There's a similar Brewdog one as well I was thinking of buying but the only sell that in their pubs for now.

The Brooklyn one has quite a few variations too. IPA's, Brown ale etc. Even a grapefruit one I think. I'd have to get one of those snazzy beer bottle presses too.

Yes, my boss does it and apparently it's lethal.

My Dad brewed some cider last year and I can agree with that. Apparently after a few extra weeks it eventually mellowed out, but when I tried it the stuff was rocket fuel.

I got him a brew kit for his Birthday yesterday, larger this time, so will be interesting to see how it goes for him.

Turbocider is unbelievably easy. Do not, I repeat, do not, buy cider 'kits'. They taste strawberry floating awful. It might cost a little more to buy pure apple juice but you'll get something which actually tastes nice.

I've done a plastic beer brewing (coopers I believe) after my brother got it for my birthday a year or so ago.

Was quite exciting, if very straightforward/basic, and the beer tasted better than i thought it would. Not too sure if i'll do much more brewing though. At least not in the next couple of years.

I could go for the plastic bucket cheap as hell approach but I know I would get board and want to do things properly with out mixes and kits.

You'd end up needing a larger board though.

I've been brewing kits for years, try adding chillies to a larger kit - just boil & simmer a big pan with eight or so chillies in before adding it to the fermenting bin (pour through a sieve to keep the chillies out of the bin.) then brew as the instructions say.

That sounds like a really mean trick.

I've been brewing chilli beer for years. You can buy it in bottles from specialist places but it ain't cheap. I only use Youngs or Geordie kits for it though, as it's not worth buying an expensive kit to batter it with chillies.

Like I said, I only stick eight or so chillies in it (40 pint kit) to give it a taste, I guess you could go really mean and chuck a bagful in...wouldn't like to try it myself though...

You can do it with root ginger also. There's a ginger beer kit you can buy, but it's a small can, the alcohol content is low and it's more expensive than a standard larger kit. Just peel and thinly slice a few lumps of ginger and do what I said with the chillies. Or do it with the chillies - I've done both. I tend to stick to one or the other. You can also not bother sieveing it so the stuff goes into the fermenting bin, but then you get the aggro of syphon pipes getting blocked and seeds in your bottles.

Many years ago (before I was born) my dad used to make elderberry wine, about 5 or 6 years ago my grandad found a bottle of it in the back of a cupboard that had somehow fermented even further to become something like brandy, we all reluctantly tried some (assuming it would be awful) and it was mind blowingly good.

Shame it took 30+ years to get like that
