I think it will be Monday before we reach 48. If we do reach it all.

Do you have a source for that?

Laura Icantspellhersurname from the BBC has said this. Faisal Islam said something similar. It's not really confirmed 100%.

If true, does this proves they been bluffing a threat of a no confidence vote the whole way through negotiations? Because that would be funny if so.

Edit - just seen Garth's post. Okay.....

It isn’t a coup at all. But what it does do is force them into action rather than just words. Then it forces Boris and all the others to do the same. They’ll have to vote her out and it’s whether anyone will have the numbers for that as well.

If they can't even get 48 letters in, how are they going to carry a vote of no confidence? This is just a waste of time.

Possibly. But it’s always intriguing what the main players say or don’t say.

I want to know what Gove is playing at he's defending May but won't take on the brexit secretary job. It doesn't make sense to me.

Doesn't want to be responsible for no deal, doesn't want to be responsible for a bad deal

Expected as much. This is very likely an empty threat, and likely always has been.

He doesn’t like the deal and wants to be allowed to improve on it. But for May and the EU - it’s done.
Therefore he won’t be Brexit secretary but he also wont put himself in or through the same gooseberry fool as last time.
I think he thinks there aren’t the numbers to shift her in a leadership contest or he’s waiting to see which horse to back.

His opinion and endorsement will be sought and he will have a price.

There might be more going on behind the scenes.

But if all the threats all the posturing from the Brexiteers/ERG that led to this deal (and similar with Cameron's decision to call the Referendum) amount to a damp squib...

I'm not sure how I'd feel. It's not schadenfreude,,,

If Brady has got the 48 letters, is he allowed to spend time double checking if MPs are sure they want to go through with it before informing the PM? And if he is permitted to give Theresa May 48 hours notice privately before making it public, during those 48 hours can MPs be convinced to withdraw their letters to prevent the leadership challenge or would it still go ahead anyway?

No idea.

No idea how long the letters last for as well. Does he have to get 48 letters in (say) a week. Of if he gets 20 now and 29 3 months later do they add up?

One thing that will be stopping a lot of them sending their letters is that failure to remove her would then give her a year in which they would be unable to challenge her.

A lot of them will be waiting until the deal fails in Parliament. Otherwise they’d risk her deal being voted down and they’d have no way of removing her if she remains stubborn.
