I agree with Moggy, they would have been better going all in on a full reversal. Their fortunes would have been better than they are now, if they had not pussy footed around respecting a referendum that has since been proven as compromised.

Its amazing how much they fudged it. Cable even came out and said in a coalition they would only team up with the Tories! strawberry floating hell! Yellow Conservatives!

I feel Clegg gets way too much flak for taking the chance of a century and having it backfire, but these guys have converted me to a Labour voter maybe permanantly, mainly because they can't guarentee me an anti-Brexit policy.

Their main problems at the snap election was their previous betrayal of their core support and having Farron in charge. I am not convinced they would have been able to overcome those issues, but being a proper anti-Brexit party might be what’s needed.

At the moment we have the Tories as the hard/soft (depending on which rebel group is scaring the PM at the time of asking) Brexit party and Labour are a soft Brexit party.

The Lib Dems have nothing to lose by becoming an anti-Brexit party and they may well have a hell of a lot to gain from it.

Or more likely, they will turn properly anti-Brexit, go into a coalition with the Conservatives or Labour and then sell all their voters down the river in return for 5 years of cabinet positions.

And whose fault was it that it backfired?

I don’t think Clegg is a horrible person, but he either had his head turned by a sniff of power or he was dangerously naïve. The Lib Dems (and the entire country) would have been better off if he had refused to go into coalition and collapsed Cameron’s “leadership” back in 2010.

He was naive, but he wasn't corrupted by power. He had a chance to get Lib Dem policies into governance for the first time ever, and the Conservatives just didn't play ball. Its not like the Lib Dems could get into power with a majority...

I never said he was corrupted by power, he had his head turned by it though.

The Conservatives didn’t play ball? He should have made sure they did then! The Tories needed him far more than he needed them.

Clegg betrayed his voters and the current disaster can be traced all the way back to his decision to join Cameron.

I agreed with the coalition when it happened but thought the Lib Dems should have broken off mid way through the vote. Probably after the AV referendum.

At the time I thought the Lib Dems might be able to stop the worst of the Tory excesses. And save the country from the chaos of not having a proper government.

Yeah, that worked out well…..

Tory rebels could get fooled by May winking at them at this point.

I did mention the Greens as a possibility earlier.

I think I’d rather Caroline Lucas move to Labour or Lib Dems though.

Feel so powerless and hacked off with the whole process, I've done the only thing I can - write to my MP (Leo Docherty)!!! Mainly around how it's very clear no one has a clue what this process actually entails, and if they are going to be silly enough to push ahead with it at least delay it, do some research and planning, and do it properly (or as properly as possible). Obviously all a bit more eloquent than that, but along those lines.

I'm not holding out much hope for the response.

But overall it really is insane that it seems doing this will be a massive act of self harm to the country, but they just plow on regardless.

I assume this is because you feel it's a wasted vote rather than any particular dislike of their manifesto pledges? Sadly I guess if everyone feels like that then nothing ever changes.

Leo Docherty is in the ERG.

Good luck
