Is it time we as a country seriously started thinking about nationalising this sector? Does anyone care which company slaps their masthead on your gas and electric bill?

I don't care for (poorly fitted) smart meters and all this other guff. I'm quite capable of turning my own lights off on my own volition.

Gas is gas, electric is electric. We all need it, and it should cost what it actually costs, with enough added on top to cover investment in infrastructure and improvements, not a monumental profit making exercise.

There will of course be a time in the future we're all making our own power (solar panels for example) and these people can take a running jump.

Utilities are essentials, and should not be open to profiteering by the free market. There's no reason not to nationalise.

Every new home should have them built in.

Shameless profiteering of a basic necessity. I guess their shareholders will be happy.

Underlying operating profits from its UK home energy supply arm fell 26% to £381m as the group said it was also hit by warmer than normal temperatures and the pre-payment tariff cap.

Centrica's overall underlying operating profits were 4% lower at £816m for the six months to 30 June.

Says it all doesn't it.

How are they going to cope with those meagre profits?

Nationalisation of gas, electricity, water, and public transport is a must.

Nationalise them.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

EDF put mine up a few months ago and so I've switched to Green Energy. Their tarrif is comparable now to these big suppliers that have all put up their pricing. The daily service charge is a little more with them, but the unit price is less so for me it evens out.

And because they use Solar, Tidal, Wind and Waste as energy sources it shouldn't go up in price like the fossil fuel providers

I switched to Green Star not long ago so I'm 100% renewable on electricity, plus they were the cheapest anyway.

Time to switch i believe although im sure they are all as bad as it other.

Also you might be paying Green star and believing you get renewable energy when in reality all they do is provide the grid with renewable energy, what ends up at your house will be a mix of everything. But the more renewable energy the better.

How far off are we from being able to install solar panels and rely solely on them for our energy?

I think that's a given unless there are two grids running. The money is still going to the company that installs and maintains the green solutions which brings average running cost down making it more affordable for everyone. Plus you're divesting from fossil fuel which puts pressure on the big companies to look at alternatives or go out of business

Now. People just need to switch to them.

Solar panels don't generate that much electricity really when you're talking the type and number of panels that are installed on a house roof, especially in somewhere like the UK where sunny weather is hardly reliable.

Plus it'd mean no electricity at night unless you also installed a massive battery somewhere.

I naively assumed the energy would store up so that you could use it overnight and sell the excess on the black market, like a middle-class gangsta.

Nah, the excess beyond your own usage just goes back to the grid and you get paid a pitifully tiny amount for it.
My parents have a dozen 4kw panels on their house and get a cheque for about £120 every three months for energy sent to the grid.

Then again they can't complain because for a few years they had an old style electricity meter that couldn't handle solar panels so as well as sending back excess their meter ran backwards. Eventually British Gas realised what was going on and forced a replacement meter in them, but agreed it was their own strawberry float up and so wrote off the bill there would have been for the meter running backwards. (That or they just couldn't be arsed figuring it out)

Would have placed money on this being a KK thread.

Yes, terrible news. The sooner the sector is nationalised the better.

Solar panels are a good investment and will eventually pay for themselves if you plan on staying in your property in excess of 20 years. However they have dropped in price massively (they're around £8000 and under now, I think) so look to the future and you can see where we'd be if they became the norm.

I can't believe how much less of an ass energy has been since switching from Npower, I think my provider only has a couple 10 thousand customers but I pay £30 a month bill split (two of us so £60 a month) whereas previously due to billing strawberry float ups years old we were being charged stuff like £180 in one go by Spark and Npower who could never sort out anything. Before starting to account for winter it was just £45 a month so £22.50 each which was amazing.

That was the kind of usage we were meant to be on as we're energy aware with Spark until everything went to gooseberry fool and they started demanding an insane amount of money. We just moved into an Npower property a few years ago (stupidly signed up to their letters for "the occupier" - which by the way, you never need to take out a contract for and can keep paying as "the occupier" so they can't pursue you). I eventually got the Spark debt written off as their service was appalling.

It's Places for People (PfP) who put profits into community centres and low cost housing projects. The best thing was when we overpaid them by using hardly any gas (the pressure was also wrong on the metre) and got a £185 refund immediately so we could continue repaying Npower's bills to get them to finally strawberry float off - something various companies have told me is impossible in the past without waiting months or only being issued credit. I'm not sure I even remember asking them to do it. The worst thing these companies do is hold onto your money and can barely even explain their own billing so that was very surprising.

I think it's generally considered that they pay for themselves in about 10 years.
The problem is that some of the panels also have a lifespan of about 10 years.

Whatever you do though never get those 'free' panels where you get a lower bill but none of the money for the excess. They basically mean your roof is owned by someone else for 25 years (but you're still responsible for repairs and whatnot) and they generally reduce the value of the house.
