My Acer Aspire 5920 has given up the ghost - something about no power getting to the motherboard. Basically, it's broken beyong repair.

My question is: do I have a legal leg to stand on when it comes to getting any money back for it? The warranty was for 12 months and I've had it for 15; is it reasonable to expect a laptop to last more than a year and a bit? Or should I just cut my losses and shell out for another one?

If it's older than 12 months there's no chance of a refund. and from what I can gather, you'll get no help from Acer customer support.

Oooh, here's were it gets complicated. The Sales of Goods act states, items should be of satisfactory quality and takes into account price paid, fitness for purpose etc.

Quite frankly, a laptop, an expensive item breaking after 15 months isn't of a satisfactory quality and isn't fit for it's purpose.

You could go back to the shop, stating this and they'd most likely tell you to strawberry float off. As you've gone over the 12 months. Have a shufty at this site.

I'd also contact the manufacturer and see what they can.

EU law gives you 24 months. Speak to them, they will probably fix it, but Acer's customer support is as shoddy as their products.

It's definitely busted? If the power's not getting to the motherboard, then could be the PSU itself, which you might be able to source a replacement for relatively cheaply?

If it's the mobo, you're probably strawberry floated unless you can source a "spares or repairs" donor from ebay or something. Though the only such 5920 on ebay at this time sound so absolutely totalled that it's not worth consideration.

The guy at the IT place said that it was royally buggered (not his exactl words) and made it clear that it was dead.

Oooh, that's good to hear. I'll give them a ring at some point when I'm not so busy at work and mention that, see what they say. Tbh I'd prefer it if I could get some sort of refund for it so I can get something better, but I guess them fixing it is good enough.

Also, check what you bought it with. One of my credit cards gives me a 2 year extended warranty on everything I buy with it. I've no idea how to use it though

Righto, I love law stuff.

The reatiler you bought it from cant help you. If you wish to claim inder the 6 year sales og goods act, you must get a verified, authorised agent to look at it, and if needs be, pay him to do it. If he verifies its faulty and has been since day 1 then you have a case, if its developed a fault later on in its life then I doubt you will get anywhere unfortunately.

Contact the head office from where you bought it from after speaking to and technician type person/.

Fabian Delph is a banana split.
