Hi All,
I've broken my phone.

I don't want to get a new phone as I'm currently in a place where i really don't need it. However I do need whatsapp and facebook messenger.

I was thinking about buying a tablet, as my laptop is all naff so it kills two birds with one phone, but on research it seems there is trouble with using whatsapp on these?

Does anyone know more? Can you get whatsapp on an Ipad (what im looking at) without a phone to connect it to?

If you can't....is it possible on a decent samsung tablet?

I recently sent an Iphone X back to the UK for my brother to sell too, oh the irony (id use a cheaper phone than that anyway!).

You need a phone number for WhatsApp. So it would have to be a tablet with data

WhatsApp is phones only, it's ridiculous.

Although a 4g tab S2 8 will let you install it as it is effectively a big phone, have phone earlier speaker, mics the works.

Facebook messenger will work fine wherever you use it, though.

Well I've salvaged my SIM from my phone...and as I won't be needing it for anything else maybe i'll be able to put it in a tablet? I really don't know the ins and outs of tablets!

Whatsapp works on PC but you do need a phone to activate it , can you borrow a phone to get over this.

Yeah you should just need a phone to activate it

You could just buy a £10 phone so you have something for emergency calls anyway?

Whatsapp on PC for me has always required my phone to also have a mobile signal, it's a really weird way of doing things.

Yeah, WhatsApp needs to connect to the WhatsApp app on your phone, or it won't work, sadly.

I've scrapped the idea and just ordered a cheap Nokia.

A tablet would be nice but until it can do what a phone does it's just trumped by a good phone every time.

To be honest the Android tablet market is poor nowadays. You'd get better value for money getting one of those big Huawei phones or something along those lines.

That's more like what you would need, yeah. It isn't just for activation like Orange said, anyway.

Yeah the tab can have proper WhatsApp because it as far as play and Google are concerned is a phone so you can install WhatsApp and set it up etc.

It's down to the encryption, because it is end to end you can't have multiple endpoints. You can test it by disabling network on your phone, the web/pc version will come up saying unable to connect to phone or something like that.

Yep you have to have a phone with WhatsApp set up and connected to data for WhatsApp web or desktop (which he just a borderless web app). I do this bedause I find my smartphone too distracting and I get through to some customer's choice of WhatsApp and I can share files from my computer etc. And messenger runs like gooseberry fool in my browser. If the phone isn't connected it doesn't work unlike messenger.com.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."
