I went with Bulbasaur. Not saying he was the best option, just that that's what I went with, and used him throughout my time on the game.

Bulby. Only one with dual types (at start) so has poison resistance. Auto win. And he is really useful in the first gym. Plus he didn't need to be on the cover like some Divamon and Solar Beam was bloody awesome. :datass:

I was lucky enough to get both Red and Blue for Christmas. I picked Bulbasaur on Blue and Charmander on Red.

I restarted Blue after managing to trade Bulbasaur over to red and on the next playthrough I picked Squirtle.

I hope this thread is being used to ban everyone who votes Bulbasaur

(Squirtle for me but obviously Charmander is great too)

Bulbasaur is the obvious choice for hardcore players wanting to play a more difficult game.

Charmander is for the pussys

But Charmander is literally the hardest one to start with and then the game becomes easy no matter what anyway?

Bulbasaur was clearly the worst choice. In terms of the game I'd pick Charmander, IRL I'd prefer to have a Squirtle.

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Charmander is probably optimal choice.

Charmander is the only reasonable option.

Can we ban Jam-Master Jay from Games chat for this outrage? This is worse than anything anyone has posted here ever.

Charmander. Anything else is a sign of weakness.

There are a whole bunch of reasons why Squirtle is clearly the best choice.

- anyone making the arguments for or against difficulty level are clearly missing the point of the game. It doesn't matter if Bulbasaur makes the first two gyms easier or Charmander makes them more difficult, because you're not supposed to only use the one 'mon. If you find the game easier because you picked Bulbasaur then you're playing it wrong. If you find the game harder because you picked Charmander then you're playing it wrong.

- optimal types. Blastoise being a solo water type means he only has the two weaknesses, while the final evolutions of the other two have dual typing making them more vulnerable. Venusaur's Poison-typing makes is particularly weak to Psychic-types, which in Gen 1 is a killer, plus weakness to Ground which Grass is otherwise strong against, negating one of its potential advantages. Charizard being a Flying type makes it weak to Ice (again something that's meant to be an advantage for Fire-types) and Electric as well as multiplying its existing weakness to Rock. The bonus of dual STAB moves is irrelevant as Charizard can't learn any decent Flying moves in Gen 1 and likewise with Venusaur and Poison moves.

- if you're picking Charizard because he looks like a dragon and you think dragons are cool... well, fair play to you I guess.

- Squirtle and his evolutions look better in sunglasses

- Squirtle and his evolutions are clearly better characters in the anime than either of the other two choices

- Blastoise beats Charizard, obv
