This is over my head so need some advice.

Say you wanted to set up a site for a company. Someone would upload reports to this site. There would be end users who had individual log ins, each with it's own access rights on what reports they could see.

If you wanted to hire someone to make this for you, how would you go about doing it?

Would it be someone who knows about SQL, or is it some other skill set?

It might be we have an internal website at work we log in and it has MI that we can filer and then export in various formats would it be something like that you're after?

We use some sort of BIC reporting tool.

I'm not sure if BIC is something we've designed or an industry standard tool.

I don't know what those acronyms mean :(

It wouldn't run any reports, just show something like a PDF or excel sheet that was uploaded to the back end.

It's Business Intelligence Content.

For us it's a central location where MI (Minimum Information ) is located and the end user can then filter if need be and export if they need to.

I would think different logins if they should only access certain reports. There are loads of solutions to do this from Novell Vibe and SharePoint that do that and loads more down to a simple solution using Joomla as the CMS.

Sharepoint is also something we use and it's dead easy to use.

Shame it is so bloody expensive to implement!

Yeah, different log ins, it's for hundreds of people in hundreds of locations each only allowed to access a small percent that's relevant to them and higher ups to see all, to give a rough idea.

So you think using something built for this purpose would be better than getting someone to design and build a site?

Typically you would have an intranet type solution like Sharepoint for this but to implement that properly you need a Sharepoint developer (they deal in languages like ASP and MSSQL) freelance or preferably on staff, unless you outsource to a firm. Otherwise you could license the software (which is very expensive) but you still need a server and someone who can set it up, and then maintain it. Everybody needs training on the platform or you'll just be flapping around for months. You can outsource the entire infrastructure for Sharepoint to Office 365, the plan you need is probably Enterprise E3 or similar. There is a small monthly cost per user, client access would be free. On site implementation might be cheaper because of the no of users. That's a potential solution. Unfortunately Sharepoint although a Microsoft product is not very user friendly to set up, but it's possible for someone competent with IT and a logical mindset.

You would then have a separate front for the business that is basically your average consumer facing website.

It expensive, few K at least. If you go with office 365 you need to calculate the subscription cost and cost of setting it up (manhours etc).

If you wanted something more custom than that, you need a full stuck developer (PHP, Python or Ruby and HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript/MySQL/Postgres) which is running into 5-10k depending on what you need and how you hire. Day rates as much as 500 per day.

If you just need somewhere to work together (project management) and upload stuff and be able to give clients access without loads of bespoke features, take a look at Teamwork.com, but that's more for SMEs and you don't sound small.

If it's just uploading some files somewhere and some people somewhere having different levels of access, a CMS will do it. There are hundreds of open source solutions for this inc Joomla, Drupal, Mambo, even Wordpress (but not Wordpress). It needs to be installed on a web server (Linux Apache MySQL PHP or LAMP). Some Web hosts do 1 click solutions for this. This would be your budget option.

You really need to hire a IT consultant to figure out the best solution for you, even if it's just for 1 day. A few £££. Or you can take ownership of this yourself and go deeper into the resourcing, but I would ask yourself whether you're prepared to jump in and it's in your remit / you're being compensated fairly before you risk over extending yourself.

Currently, after speaking to errkal, I'm looking at joomla, but will be testing it this weekend at the earliest. Thanks for all that info, if it turns out this simple solution isn't enough I'll certainly look into each one in depth.
