Nah, gooseberry fool gets real when you've been paying the mortgage for 5 long years and realise you've still got 20 years left to go.

Going through the house buying process now. Well, I say house, but obviously I mean flat, nobody can afford a house around here. The amount of money you need to borrow just for a 2 bed... :dread:

Guy next to me got his 2-bed for £240k. It's crazy.

Man this Sunday I'll have had the keys to my house for a year! The novelty still hasn't worn off.

We've had to go down the shared ownership route for now, because we both don't yet "earn enough" to be eligible for a mortgage down here. Thing is people with the help to buy ISA are nearly priced out of the bonus because you can only use it on houses below 250k :fp: Apart from it being "close to london" I cant really see the justification for such ridiculous prices!

Get a deposit and get quotes for the solicitors fees, also open help to buy isa.

Ours all got rubber stamped today, the MA has just got to write up his report and send it to me along with all the documents we need to send back. Gotta go order a sofa tomorrow, strawberry floats sake, this is far to grown up for me, fingers crossed it could all be done with within the month, the owner is moving in with his in laws while they wait for their property to be built.

So not sure if this is the right thread, but I put my name down to rent out a studio flat on a small town's high street. It's about 8 doors away from my Mum and a 15 minute ride from work/5 to the station by bus.

It's not massive, I can fit in it after measuring and it's the cheapest I'll ever be able to find. It's £750pcm and I'm really hoping I can get it. I had to pay the admin fee for the letting agents tonight and the landlord/landlady seem to like me, so let's see how this goes.

I wanted to buy and avoided getting trapped renting, but I'll never earn enough without saving for 20 years to buy around here.

If you've paid the admin fee to the letting agents they should be taking it off the market and stopping viewings. Imagine once your references are checked you'll be able to sign for it

Good luck StayDead, I'm sure it'll go great. (If you don't mind me saying!) from what you've told us about how things are going at home I think you'll find it to be for the best. It's possible to rent and still save up a mortgage deposit if you're careful -- you could look into things like the Help to Buy ISA. Being 26 you have plenty of time.

Good luck Staydead, £750 a month sounds expensive (although is probably right for your area) but it would be worth double that to get away from your crazy stepmother.

£750 is a hell of a lot cheaper than my area is normally (just down the road is a smaller flat with less storage for 950 a month, yay commuterville). Yeah, getting away from her will be nice and I'm hoping that it'll make things better for my Dad. My Dad and I have a lot of history that I've explained before, but throughout all this he's always tried to take my side which means a lot. I don't want his wife having to stress him all the damn time because she doesn't like me very much. This way I think it's better for everyone.

I'll be down the road (literally a one minute walk, on flat ground so I could bring my Mum over and cook) from my Mum and not too far away from work. Oh well, fingers crossed. The affordability check is 22.5k per year. I have 9k in my account and 20k per year salary so hopefully I should pass the affordability check.

My pursuit to buy somewhere which barely got out of the starting blocks has been put on hold for another year in which I have the opportunity to save even more. To be honest though I'm not optimistic at finding anything.

Can't help but feel the situation is strawberry floated when I have saved a big deposit, earn a semi decent wage and the idea of buying somewhere in London or communtersville is basically out of the question. The first time buyer ISA is a nice idea and I've set one up but the idea that a couple of grand from the government will help me get on the property ladder is laughable.

I occasionally have to get a coach that drives along the Thames for a bit and I see all these new build blocks of flats which must have thousands upon thousands of flats in them and I'm just left wondering who the strawberry floating lives there.

While that Help to Buy ISA is a nice idea, like you I can't see how it's going to help many people when the house prices go up in price quicker than what the government/limits of those accounts can cover
