PostBuying a Wii
by Drej » Tue Dec 11, 2012 11:38 am

So I have decided im gonna spoil my little nephew this chirstmas, its gonna be my last proper present, since now I have two more nephews and next xmas will probably be already moved into my new place with the missus so wont have the possibility of giving him these kind of gifts...

HE is 6 btw, and looks like hell be quite the gamer in the future as he loves playing on his laptop and sometimes comes up to play on with the udraw tablet on my xbox. (He does get bored quite quickly fo things though :s)

Anyways, I know strawberry float all about Wii... im seeing loads of things and im a bit confused.

I am also considering buying him a second hand one, if the console is in mint condition... I spotted a couple of Wii + Mario Kart (one of them plus Wii Sports) bundles for a 100 euro... which would be great as I would like to buy him an extra controller so that he can play with his mates (or me :D) when they're around.

If I get him mario kart + sports it should keep him entertained for quite a bit (I hope) which brings me to main gripe... the controllers, is it worth investing in the official ones (they look fukn pricey) and do I need the nunchuck? Also... how much difference does the motion plus thing (which I assume is a sort of signal booster) really make? Any pointers?

Also if you know of any must have games for a six yr old which I could maybe spot for a bargain somewhere it would be cool!

Thanks!

I'd say you do need a nunchuk, a 1st hand Wii will always come with one remote+nunchuk so for most games he'll probably need one. As for unnoficial controllers, I didn't even know they existed! Definitely go for the official ones here.
As for the Motion plus, I wouldn't bother, it's an expensive add on that most games wont use.

If you're getting Mario Kart (and presumably Wii sports will come included) that'll probably keep him occupied for a while. Mario Galaxy (the 1st one should be available pretty cheap) would be a great game if you wanted to get anything else.

Thanks for the help dude :)

So will start searching for an extra controller and a nunchuck!

Ill see how he goes with the other games before I buy him mario galaxy, that way he can first adapt to the controls... Unfortunately no Wii Sports with the one im getting as the seller did not msg back... so extra controllers and Wii SPorts + the mario kart bundle.. ID say that makes a very decent pressie :)

I guess you've already bought it now, but one thing that you could have looked out for was what version of the Wii it was.

The full original version will also play Gamecube games and has 4 controller ports and memory card slots to support this. Last year they released the Wii Family Edition without GC support.

The original Wii is therefore probably better, though obviously you need the GC controllers to play Gamecube games.

Motion Plus is a better version of the controller, but it only makes a difference in compatible games. Wii Sports Resort for example. To be honest there are only a handful of Motion Plus compatible games worth having, though one of those is Zelda Skyward Sword.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Wii Sports Resort
Grand Slam Tennis
Red Steel 2
And one of the Tiger Woods titles (I think 12 was the last one for Wii).

The rest are pretty rubbish and there aren't many of them...having said that for those games it definitely makes a difference and theres no reason not to have them except price. For £20 each two is probably the optimum number.

If you haven't bought it yet, I've got a fully boxed, near mint Wii (with GameCube support), 2 remotes, 2 nunchucks, some RESI GameCube games, GC pad and memory card, wireless sensor bar and a component cable up for sale if you're interested. PM me if you are with a price. :)

I bought it last friday.

Got a Wii-Mario Kart bundle for 100 euro, still udner guarantee so it was a fairly good price I guess.

Was not really interested in GC backwards compatibility... Kid can hardly hold a proper controller in his hand, so I wanted him to have something which is easier to control... got him an extra controller + nunchuck, no motion plus though, planning to get a wii sports on the cheap if I can ever find it that is o_O

Thanks all for the feedback, Thanks Andrew appreciate the offer, didnt see it in time, but was hard pressed for time to be fair, as I dont think it could have arrived in malta in time for christmas.
