Quick, to GR!

The plug socket I have my TV plugged into occasionally makes a buzzing noise which I believe it contributing to the TV picture faintly flickering.

Normally I would put this down to loose wiring in the plug socket, however it seems that it is only the TV that is causing the buzzing. When I try the same socket with my Xbox or Apple TV and the Television off I get nothing.

So, is this a loose wire or something wrong with the TV itself? I don’t want to call the landlord if the problem is my appliance.

Put a fork in there to see if you dislodge any debris that may be causing a disturbance.

Might be a fault within the plug itself, or the fuse might be on its way out. Maybe try replacing the fuse in the plug first, see if that resolves the problem.

Try the TV in a different socket to see if it's the TV or socket that's the problem.

Buzzing typically means electricity arcing, which itself usually points to some kind of loose connection. First thing I’d check would be the plug itself, first by trying it in another socket and seeing if you get the same noise and flickering, then by opening it up and checking all connections are secure. If you’re safe and you know how to shut off your electricity you could remove the front panel from your wall socket and just visually inspect for anything obviously loose, frayed, melted.

I'd pop the fuse out of the TV plug and check for damage on the terminals or the fuse. Some of those connections can deteriorate over time.

Any signs of overheating on the plug or socket?
Yellowing of the socket front would indicate overheating.

I think your TV's power supply is failing.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Lack of follow up makes me think he took Knoyleo's advice.

I'm sure Carlos is fine, but probably worth editing that reply anyway. These threads can turn up on a google search and people have done stupider things before!

Exactly. Everyone knows that for safety you first have to make sure the fork is soaking wet.

You’re not likely to fit a fork in a plug. Luckily I had a screwdriver handy…..

Or not! Anyway, I’m going to change the fuse over and see if I get any changes. The plug socket itself is insulated metallic to match the decor but there are no signs of any heat coming from it or damage to anything external.

The buzzing is prominent during boot up of the TV then dies after a few seconds which my GCSE in electronics assumes it down to it drawing less current. If there were some TV big wrong with the plug socket itself I would have assumed that the buzzing was constant.

Having looked into it I don’t think I have an electrical safety certificate from my landlord despite living there for over a decade. I’m hoping that getting someone in to check everything will also cover any faults too.
