http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/a162217/sega-moonwalker-re-release-unlikely.html

Did anyone play this when it originally came out? my brother had it on the Mega Drive and i thought it was awesome at the time.

Sega has responded to requests for a Moonwalker video game re-release in the wake of Michael Jackson's death.

Through its official Twitter feed, Sega said that the requests were "understandable" but would take a long time due to rights issues.

"Lots of requests for a Moonwalker re-release, which is understandable, I'd imagine such a release wouldn't be possible for a long time though," the firm said.

"Who has say over the MJ image rights and estate for instance? Those things won't be sorted particularly fast you'd've thought."

Sega also agreed with a comment from one its followers suggesting that the re-release would be seen as a cashing in on the tragedy.

"You have to weigh it up, some fans would like it, others would see a cash-in on the unfortunate loss' - Exactly," it said.

Developed and published by Sega, the movie tie-in was released on the Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear and Arcade in 1990.

Wasn't that game terrible though? I think I saw it on some list about the worst games on MD.

Not all of them, no. There were a LOT of games that bore the Moonwalker name on different platforms. Here's the ZX Spectrum version, looking NOTHING like the Megadrive or arcade versions.

To be honest, I preferred the arcade game.

Ha, funny game. Loved it. Got damn tough though, some of the later levels were rock hard.

Did the game actually play any good? Or are the people requesting it's re-release blinded by nostalgia and sentimentality?

Fair play to that Sega spokesman, that was a very reasonable response.

I might track down a copy of the original MD game actually, I almost did the other month. It's by the same developer at Sega who did the amazing Shinobi games!

EDIT: Saying that, the ebay prices are bound to skyrocket. Boo!

They could re-release it on PSN XBLM and put it up free for a bit, then charge. It's happened with other games. Could they do it?

Lol. MJ has a huuuuge fanbase and half of them are absolutely rabid. You'll be hearing about it forever.

Actually, the arcade game remains fun. Simplistic and you can batter through it in a very short period of time, but that's kind of the point.

If they did it up a little bit (like they have with some of the XBLM games) and maybe added the choice to play his actual records for the soundtrack, as well as keeping the original in game one, then this could actually be a pretty good tribute.

This episode of Angry Video Game Nerd from January should answer all the questions anyone has about this game (warning: as is usually the case with AVGN expect strong language throughout):

Given the prices it's currently fetching on >>ebay<< I'd welcome an XBLA or PSN re-release, I'm sure I do have it in the loft though.

It was a cracking game.

I used to absolutely piss myself at the animated face of Jackson saying "owwww". I miss the cheesy side of gaming.
