It's a difficult one. I work with someone who spends several hundreds on FUT. I think it's mental but he enjoys it so who am I to tell him any different? Would he be better off like a lot of games to spend that money on games that he will never play?

I presume they try to justify the price by saying people buying skins and the like keep it free for the rest? But even so that price is ridiculous

Yup. There was a really interesting Waypoint interview with a former BioWare designer who casually dropped into the conversation that the most profitable thing that company ever made was ME2 multiplayer, and that one dude has spent more than $15000 on it. Someone (trelliz, was this you?) mentioned that they knew someone who spent $6000 on Warframe.

As long as they're able to spend that much and not have it affect their financial stability, who are we to say they're wrong?

I suppose if Fortnite is all he ever really plays then I guess from his perspective dropping down several hundred pounds on it is, to him, value for money on his return. You make a good point, Hime. Is spending £28 on a Fortnite skin any different than my putting down £30 on a copy of Rival Schools (PS1) just to sit on the shelf and look nice, particularly when you factor in that if I want to play said game I'll just fire up the emulated version?

Maybe it's just something in me, the environment I was raised or how much I value having money but for me there is a huge difference in buying a game and buying a cosmetic item in a game.

I can't think of a single time in my 20 years of gaming that I have spent money on purely cosmetic DLC, I've bought stuff that includes it, like BOTW and Mario Kart DLC but I was really buying the extra objectives and tracks there. I honestly can't think of a time the skin has been the thing I was investing money for and I think that's because I view it as having inherently no value. It doesn't make me play the game more, it doesn't affect the way I play and it barely makes me enjoy my time with the game any more. I think targeting this stuff mainly at people who's perception of this stuff isn't fully developed is a very shady business practice, especially when you're already making an obscene amount of money.

I'm sure you have better stuff to be talking to other parents about but I'd be interested how others like you deal with this and just how pissed off you are at companies that are charging these prices. It feels like it should be regulated somehow or at least a maximum price for cosmetic stuff be enforced.

It's not entirely up front if the cost is hidden behind V-Bucks. I know it lists how much to buy set quantities of V-Bucks, but still the actual pounds and pence value of these items is not listed next to them.

£20. They sold an outfit recently for that much for charity I believe. So the extra for the glider thing makes this a bit of a bargain tbh

Well yes at least with my £30 copy of an older, (somewhat sought after), title like Rival Schools I do have something physical. I've bought plenty of DLC and add-ons, but never spent money on just a skin.

I'd forgotten they use their own funny money, but that's pretty much par for the course these days. How long have Microsoft been insisting you buy their own pretend currency just to buy gooseberry fool off Xbox Live?

My point is, it's still preferable that it's a fixed value for a certain product. It's still a strawberry floating rip off.

You can buy entire games for £20. The same or more for a single skin in one is not a bargain.

I use one simple word with my eldest when he asks about cosmetic stuff on Fortnite. Wanna know the secret word? It's 'no' if he complains then tough gooseberry fool. If he acts in a way I don't like he loses his PS4 for a day to a week.

Edit: for me the prices mean nothing. If I was a prat who gave their kid whatever they asked for then yeah, I may complain. As I'm not a prat who gives his kids whatever they ask for iteans little. More people should do the same.

Christ and I thought the price of skins in League of Legends was bad. Didn't know we had it 'so good'

To be fair to League I've got a bunch of stuff for free and I genuinely love the game (even though I'm god awful)

But yeah that price for a skin is outrageous. I put Epic on my subconscious black list along with EA and Ubisoft a long time ago though. I basically play League and PS4 exclusive gems like Horizon Zero Dawn.
