Having recently switched ISPs I no longer have a proper email address so have set up a gmail account to use alongside my hotmail account.

Is there a way to retrieve webmail from both accounts using Thunderbird or Outlook as you would with standard emails?

Short answer is yes. I suggest adding your Hotmail account to your Gmail (that can act as a pop3 or imap client and then access those emails) and then accessing that via imap in thunderbird. Google has all the instructions you need for doing that.

Then you can choose who you want to "Send As".

What you need to find are the specific imap or pop settings (the advantage of imap being folders and not changing stuff on the server) for Hotmail and Gmail in their help pages.

If you don't want to do that, then you can add both accounts to Thunderbird.

I don't actually use a mail client anymore because Gmail itself is fine.

Yes. Thunderbird comes with a settings database of commonly used email providers. It's as simple as typing in your email address and password and then Thunderbird will set up the rest.
