Really good game, an interesting setup that I think paid off in the end; even though we did actually get very lucky with letter clues, in the early stages I was finding it hard to trust them absolutely since at that point we had no real ideas of who to trust. I think the key to it would have been for the cannibals to get in there early with leadership challenges to sow some confusion early on tbh. Big kudos to Dan and Karl for running it, anyway.
Also, how the hell did Errkal survive till the end? I was expecting him to be targeted as soon as he became our go-to trusted guy.

I just want to point out how absolutely raging I am that I got seered when I did.
I put myself forward to visit the basement abatoir. I was an omnivore at that point.
We made the choice to burn the meat (Not unanimously it seems).
I was then apparently chosen at random to become a cannibal.

I must have been seered immediately following this. Woke up hungover on saturday afternoon to find that Errkal had pointed suspicion at me, revealed I'd been seered and had me lynched. By the time I realised I had no time to do anything about it.

Absolutely gutted and extremely lucky timing by the seer.

Allied to the fact that the Lynch votes had to be in thread (thus removing our ability to block vote) meant we had little or no chance.

I appreciate it's difficult to change things and get the balance right and I would like to thank Karl and Dan for what must have been considerable effort on their part.

But still it was immensely frustrating for us to play against a stacked deck.

I sympathise -- no hard feelings and genuinely cheers for playing. It was an absolute pleasure from my perspective, really fun! As you rightly say this game was a big experiment and I wouldn't necessarily suggest it be run the same next time, but I think it threw a lot of ideas out there that the next game-runner(s) could cherry-pick and run with in the future. Dan and I approached this from the start with the attitude of, let's try and make a game that plays really differently to anything we've had before. The pacing could definitely be tweaked, on a positive note though, statistically this game performed very very well in terms of "posts per player per day" compared to other recent games, suggesting that player engagement was pretty high -- so that was great to see and I was really chuffed with that.

I'd be really interested to hear more about the Cannibal strategy day-to-day. I'm not suggesting you write up a megapost or anything, but what were the pivotal moments from the Cannibals' perspective? When did you realise the game felt too hard? Would it have 'felt' better from a psychological perspective if we'd informed you beforehand that you'd get one or two (depending on event outcome -- you got two, obviously!) new recruits a few days in? This would all be super valuable feedback for the next game-runner I think!

I'd love to do this again one day (in the distant future, mind!) but I'd also love to see other people take this, particularly look at this post-game feedback, and run in their own direction with it. :D

I had no idea I was an alpha  I knew Ironhide was my alpha but then had no idea that title passed on to me when he died. I genuinely thought Errkal was saying I was "seered" even though I wasn't because he believed my crap about an amulet

Amazing scenes from the game masters, fantastic events and a completely fresh take on AYA. One of these days I'll actually know what I'm doing in these games.

I'd probably put that down to the decisions and events, sometimes in mafia/AYA it can get boring if you're not involved in the behind the scenes work but they helped that by making sure there was always something for people to get involved with.

Well done guys in the winter, glad to be on the winning aide, though I did strawberry float all. Great thanks to Dan. and Karl on running the game also.

A few final thoughts from me I think! :)

Firstly I thought it was a really imaginative and an excellently run game. Dan and Karl I salute you both, thanks a lot!

Secondly to the cannibal team: I understand your feeling that it was too difficult for you but you had two really big things in your favour, 1) the hereditary Alphas, and 2) the short game length. We were only 3 phases away from entering a grand finale so it was much closer than you think! Pacman essentially ruined your chances by signing up for the buddy event and killing mcjihge2. Without that it would have gone to the final day! Also, I think Dan is right to suggest that you were slightly passive at the beginning. Even wasting two days of omnivore time would have been really effective.

Thirdly to Cheeky Devlin: lol! That sounds infuriating.

Fourthly to Skippy and Nun: great seer team, kept themselves out of the way of cannibals but seered effectively behind the scenes. Played a crucial part in the omnivore victory!

And finally to all the other omnivores, alive or dead. We all played our part to bring down the cannibal menace. 8-)

Well played all! :toot:

Denster wrote:I also don't think the thread should have known that the cannibals were aware of the outcomes for the tasks. Again this hampered us as we couldn't mislead and get away with it.

Ah, but the decisions (tasks as you call them - basically the once-a-phase choice that the Leader makes; I'm right in thinking this is what you're referring to?) was literally a 50/50 every time, so it'd be an easy one to chalk off as a guess / simply not knowing. Omnivores got plenty of these wrong and weren't suspected for it. There was no logical consistency to the outcomes, and there wasn't meant to be - it wasn't supposed to be something uninformed players were able to deduct through reason, it was meant to be a crapshoot for everyone not in the know (and the only players in the know were the Cannibals and one FOTD per phase).

The leader had a lot of power this time around. Pick two players to die, pick a direction for the group, pick a clue. Even just getting this power once could lead the omnivores on a several-phase wild-goose chase. You might have lost a cannibal out of doing so, but you'd have potentially incriminated plenty of other, innocent players.

Of course - this is all conjecture as I can't say for sure that the game was perfectly balanced - it obviously wasn't! We've never done this game before. But we did think it was as balanced as we could reasonably make it for a first attempt. The lynch votes being out in the open were to create multiple lines of enquiry for the group at large - meaning lots of potentially innocent people incriminated for voting for innocents, or unknowingly voting against cannibals, for example. So you say it counted against you but it could also have been used by you to turn the screw.

We tried to hammer home the 'seven days, short game, loads happening' approach because we wanted you to pick up on the fact that, if you got all the decisions right, the game could be won in (IIRC) five days. And if you'd have lost some members on the way, that wouldn't matter, because they'd still be winners, and losing members wouldn't affect your ability to kill - only the decisions would do that.

The omnivores did get some lucky clues - perhaps we allowed too much of the games outcomes to hinge on RNG - but they also managed to get the right candidate each time, so they deserve some credit.

The events were all planned in advance - those that weren't fleshed out i.e. didn't have a narrative that fit the game's theme, still had the basic mechanics planned e.g. how many volunteers, what the risk is, what the reward is. The omnivores got an extra seer early on because that event went their way. Likewise, the adding-cannibals event went the best possible way for the cannibals. But almost straight after they picked up yet another good clue and the cannibal numbers continued to drop.

Like I said - it's hard (and tbh not fair) for me to say who played well or who didn't because it's not the same from our perspective, when we know all the possible outcomes and player roles. If anyone felt hard done by at any point, I can only assure you that everything was planned out in advance, nothing was changed to try and level things up, and everything that wasn't a 50/50 predetermined crapshoot was decided by Karl/myself through using a random number generator.

I hope everyone who played at least enjoyed it, and I hope any future game-runners feel free to mine any of the new concepts we introduced as they see fit.

(Watch my posting rate fall off a cliff now.)

Can I say that I was also technically an Omnivore as I was killed before I ever partook of any sweet, sweet flesh.

But yeah good game guys. Well done to Karl and Dan. Karl was having altogether too much fun.

I'm so glad that showed through, though! When I decided to play the 'heel' I was a bit worried people might take the sarcasm and grumpiness too seriously. In actuality I was having loads of fun.

Really liked the idea of volunteering as then people without a role can get in on the action. Didn't so much like the Letter clue system. The fact that it gave the exact position away made it brutally difficult. Imo it would have made more sense to say that there was, for example the Letter 'E' in cannibal #1's name --- heck even doing this the letter Z comes up quite a few times. (Although I can see this might have made the game longer)

In my particular circumstance It was Me vs. a Seer vs. an Omnivore - sure I survived one round but i could only ever survive one round. Had the pool of players been bigger it might have taken some skill to get the kill. 8-)

As for one of us going for leader... sure we could have tried, but my thoughts were if that were the case we would need the help of the other cannibals to help. In an open vote that makes it very difficult and makes the others very vulnerable - when it would be found out that the Leader was a baddie.

This with the fact that the leader would be Seered early on etc.. so yeah - from a GM point of view it might have looked like 'Oh they didn't try' but from my point of view it felt like we had limited options and hence when lynch after lynch came back... it definitely felt a wee bit skewed.

Either way big love to both Dan. & Karl!!

The game was still very enjoyable to watch unfold
