I don't get it at all?

Edit: having had a quick Google does the humour come from the fact it should be "give a hoot, don't pollute" (which I have never heard), and it is funny because it doesn't rhyme now/tney don't care about pollution?

Or they're using "hoot" instead of another thing someone might give, that rhymes with "book"

The joke is it's from a slogan whose aim it is to get children interested in reading (Krusty fronts the campaign) and yet its author is so poorly read they don't realise hoot doesn't rhyme with book.

But Krusty is illiterate and you don’t tell if words rhyme by reading them (with one exception).

I don’t think there’s any layers to the joke there, outside of it simply not rhyming.

It’s like saying “I’m a poet and I didn’t even realise” when you unintentionally say something that rhymes
