Jerkass Homer has been around since classic era Simpsons.

If you have a problem about the incest angle then classic Simpsons already did it (Lady Bouvier's Lover).
I don't think it's because of the plots that the modern eps are gooseberry fool. Strip classic eps of everything bar the plot and they can sound just as gooseberry fool (Homer meets his rich twin brother). Modern eps took a nosedive because of the shite writing and jokes not because of gooseberry fool plots and wank celeb guest spots. And maybe we're just too familiar with the whole thing that no matter what they do we just think it's gooseberry fool/merely okay.
That Selma/Grandpa ep though... I haven't seen it all the way through once. :shudder:
