PostCapcom, Square Enix and Koei change E3 plans due to flu.
by The Alchemist Penguin » Wed May 20, 2009 2:53 pm

Capcom has confirmed to OXM that Dead Rising 2 will not be making an appearance at this year's E3, due to swine flu fears preventing the Japanese office from attending.

We were all set to sit down with the producer and hear more about the zombie-slaying sequel, which ditches potato-faced snapper Frank West and his mall 'o undead for a new hero trapped in a Vegas-style casino.

But we've been informed that the appointment has been cancelled due to swine flu fears and there won't be any Dead Rising 2 material of any kind at the show.

Which sucks. Check out what we do know about Dead Rising 2 in our preview.

Japanese developers not flying to E3; Sony and Nintendo's Far Eastern staff still attending

The Japanese offices of two major publishers have prohibited staff from attending E3 in June – due to fears over swine flu.

Develop understands that Square Enix has cancelled plans for its Kingdom Hearts team to attend the show, whilst Koei has confirmed that an unspecified number of its Japanese employees will not be travelling to the event in Los Angeles.

Both will still have a strong turnout at E3, however, with European and American staff present – alongside a reduced number of representatives from Japan.

Nintendo and Sony have also confirmed that neither will be limiting their turnout due to Swine Flu concerns.

The news follows Capcom’s decision to review the number of Japanese employees it will send out to E3, as the growing number of Swine Flu cases saw famed Capcom producer Keiji Inafune cancel his appearance at the Nordic Game expo in Malmo, Sweden.

Typical, what looks to be one the best E3 in years, gets hampered by this stinking flu. :x

What about Capcom's Euro office/team? Couldn't they go on behalf of The Company?

Swine Flu isn't even real. This is just like that Bird Flu gooseberry fool that they made up a few years ago. And Foot and Mouth before that. When will people realise.

Pussies. I haven't heard anything about swine flu for at least a week. I can't believe they're that scared of it.

Don't they have the threat of Sars to worry about? shouldn't that get them out of the country?

And surely they could pre-record a video and send it over the lazy banana splits.

Isn't the game being developed in Canada?

Yeah, I'm not buying that excuse for a minute and as Oxx says, the game is being developed by Blue Castle Games in Canada.

It's being developed by both Blue Castle and part of the original Capcom DR team, and it was the interviews with the Japanese producer that have been cancelled. They also cancelled their other appointments which involve the Japanese staff at the Nordic Conference recently, so the Japanese studio has really locked itself down. Capcom must be treating the game as still being "internally" developed, and aren't allowing Blue Castle off the leash to demo the game themselves. Pretty harsh, really.

Capcom's response to why only DR2 has been cancelled:
While Dead Rising 2 will no longer be at the show, all of Capcom's other expected video games will be there, Kramer said. The decision to not show Dead Rising 2 was driven by the fact that Capcom's Keiji Inafune and other developers based in Japan will not be making the trip.

While Canadian-based Blue Castle is developing Dead Rising 2, Inafune is the executive producer and keeps a close eye on the game's development.

"Dead Rising 2 is the only game we won't be able to showcase at E3, because it's at an early stage of development and the team is not comfortable having anyone else demo the code," Kramer said.

But other developers have now chimed in:

Three Japanese companies have already said they won't come because of the Swine Flu?

That sounds... phobic. They need a reality check over there!
