I hate car insurance.

I paid £1100 in total for both of my cars, I've paid more than that in insurance in one year on either of them. Currently got it at just shy of £1300 a year and I'm not even the main driver

There's news that could affect the massive hikes in insurance prices these last few years, I posted it in the car thread if no one's seen it.

Jus Luke wrote:Car Insurance is a rip off. Surely these companies should be regulated much harder to prevent them ripping people off. When you think about it, they don't actually do much at all. It's not like anybody is leaving their desk to provide you with a service.

Also, following this ruling that prevented Sheila's Wheels from giving cheaper insurance to women due to sexism, why isn't the same rule applied to ageism.

I hate insurance companies more than banks.

They aren't ripping anyone off. The industry has made losses every year for about the last 20 years

They have to cover the cost of claims which they aren't, so premiums go up.

The Telegraph says:
Despite the cost of cover being bumped up year after year, motor insurers claim that they have not made a profit for 16 years. According to Fitch Ratings, the insurance industry pays out £123 in claims for every £100 in premiums collected. This is because of uninsured drivers, fraudulent claims and a steep rise in the number of whiplash claims by motorists enlisting the help of personal injury lawyers.
David Powell, underwriting manager at Lloyds Market Association, said he expected motor insurance premiums would continue to increase due to the loss-making years.
Both he and former Association of British Insurers director Mark Boleat told MPs that the recent sharp rise in premiums was a "correction" by the insurance industry.
Tony Baker, director general of the Credit Hire Organisation, said: "Premiums have gone up in the last few months because the motor insurance industry has lost so much money in the last few years that they reached a stage where they could not afford to keep premiums at the existing level."

Yeah, well, I just went to confused and got a quote from esure for £390, put some add ons options on and that brings me out at a very respectable £460.

When I phoned my insurers up I laughed at them down the phone when they asked if I was renewing.

I did that once. Renewal came through at some ridiculous price (I had no claims and they had put it up by hundreds of pounds). I told them I had a better quote elsewhere and was told they couldn’t match it. The cheeky bugger then said “Shall I go ahead with setting up your renewal then, sir?”. Yes of course, I would love to spend an extra few hundred quid for no reason!

They really must think we are stupid. Saying that though my wife pays more for her insurance than I do and never looks around "because I have been with them for years so they know me". No, they know your money.

Did I just imply my wife was stupid? strawberry float. Thats my balls getting booted if she reads this.

Having 3 points on my license increased the premium by £200.

So I stress to everyone;

Don't speed. It costs money.

Yeah they are robbing banana splits these days. I've not had an accident so I'm just paying for other people  I should crash just to get my money's worth.

I find it bizarre how companies (as it is not just insurance companies!) have such little regard for existing customers. So many businesses seem geared towards attracting new customers and spend no effort keeping the ones they have.

I have a question, that maybe you can answer.

Why do my non-motoring convictions affect my insurance premiums?

And dont they stay on for 5 years? so a potential total cost of £1000. How much was the one off fine?

My boss got stopped speeding and opted to go on a course (~£80 cost) instead of getting points/fine.

Don't get me started....

The fine was £70 or something like that, and in the county of Cambridge, they didn't offer speeding courses.

Not only that, they lost my driving license. So I had to pay out to get another one.

I don't work in motor insurance, but my guess would be that there is statistical evidence that people with non motoring convictions are more dangerous drivers.

Yeah, it must be all those getaway cars they're driving.
