Ive been at around 100mph but that was accidental when I was overtaking on the motorway. Ive not been in a situation so far where the road has been clear/safe enough for me to cane it and check the limits, Id rather wait for a track day really.

I know I don't have the skill to cope at the speeds it's capable of, plus I'd rather not kill anyone.

Getting UP to the speed limit as quick as possible though, that's a different story

Just a couple if OK:

Are the RAC and Swinton both OK?

Also, why such variance in quotes, why on earth would Quinn be 750 quid more than the cheapest? They just don't want my type of business?

I'm like that now. I am legally cleared to drive but i know my eyes make my reactions less than ideal so i drive at sensible speeds with safe gaps now, if i don't they will take my license away for definite.

RAC/Swinton - good businesses. I would go with RAC myself as they have a tendency to throw breakdown cover in there free sometimes.

The variance in quotes is exactly down to what you say. Companies target different consumers and it's likely Quinn are after a different consumer entirely. They aren't explicitly allowed to say they don't want your business because your a certain demographic so what they do is just whack up their prices for the sort of people they don't want.

If you guys are genuinely careful drivers then I recommend this .... http://www.confused.com/car-insurance/telematics ... get yourself a telematics policy. You will save a shed load.

Thanks Jim, much appreciated.

I will have a look at that cheers.

I think I noticed Quinn having an interest in high risk drivers, so I'm guessing the safe crowd are of no interest.

Would telematics be good for a one thousand mile a year driver like me? My driving is during rush hour though?

Nae chance. I've not clicked the link - does it monitor speed as well as distance, presumably?

I can see the advantage for young drivers, but I'd rather take my chances.

This was 5 years ago fishy, but when I passed my test and came to insure my first car Quinn were about £1000 cheaper than everyone else - so I went with them naturally.

When I came to renew last November they had put up their premium so I moved to Hastings.

My 2nd car was an old (H Reg) 1.4 Astra and it somehow managed to reach 130mph on a nice long, empty, downhill section of the A1. :D
The car after that was a slightly newer Astra with the same engine but it was much slower and wouldn't have got close to that speed.

Is Car Insurance just a total con?

My father was in a incident. It was totally the 3rd parties fault even though it was an accident.
Their insurance company accepts full liability. We contacted our insurance and they booked our car into their garage who then quoted £XXXX to fix. But the value is above today's market price of our car. Therefore it is not economical to repair. The only option is to write the car off and send us a cheque for £XXXX which we then have to use to buy a car.

We really don't want to do this as we are use to our car as we were the first owners. We'd rather use that money as a deposit towards a new car. But still it doesn't seem fair that we are now being forced into buying either a USED CAR or a NEW CAR.

The 3rd third did say they wanted to settle it personally. But they recently spoke to their insurance company who said it is now sorted and they don't have to do anything else.

Personally if we took our car to a private garage and got it quoted there it would still be very expensive. And the 3rd party aren't liable to pay us personally. Unless they wanted to do the right thing. Legally they are not liable to do anything.

I guess its just bad luck for us then.

O and it all happened on Friday the 13th too :fp:

So your dad's car is a write off. The insurance company is sending you a cheque for the value of the car. Where is the con? You could get the car repaired if you want to, but why bother when you can buy a replacement car?

What car is it anyway?

With that amount of money a replacement car would have to be a used one. All we want is our own car back. I guess we will just use it as a deposit towards a new car.

Could we still get the car repaired? If we accept the cheque then the car will be written off and disposed off. The alternative is something called CASH IN LOOP whereby we get to keep the car and an X amount of money will be given to us towards a repair. We would still be out of pocket ourselves.

Oh, and the term is "Cash in lieu" e.g You get cash in lieu of repairs.
