I think I'd go for comfort for daily commutes.

Anyway, 21000 mile service today. Got it into the garage at 21002 miles. I really let myself down.

Got another Volvo S80 courtesy car. I hate it, its like driving a sofa, but its funny. Honestly was driving to work in v heavy traffic but just wasnt bothered. Its not a fast car and isnt made to give any kind of that feedback so you just drive it so casually like you dont give a strawberry float. I can see merit in that.

I used to have a poster of an STI, and the logo always looked like a bright highlighter green/yellow, but maybe it was just the lighting of the poster itself, looking at an actual photo I see it's yellow.

Feeling a slight hesitation and lack of power today. Not sure if its just in my head. Was fine this morning but I noticed it around lunch time. Just didnt seem to have the same sensation under acceleration at around 2.5k. Its so slight though. Ive been unwell today so might just be in my head.

Or it could be a boost leak or something more sinister...

So after driving this morning, I feel like maybe I still have the same level of power, but the delivery just seems a tiny tiny bit different. Maybe its in my head. It doesnt feel slower, but at 2500-3000rpm it feels just slightly different. I revved it out a few times and the speed built at the same kind of rate but it seems to have lost a bit of the sharp edge.

Im probably doing a terrible job to describe it, but it doesnt feel the same sudden squirt - it feels, dare I say, smoother? Maybe this is how its supposed to be.

The only change I can think of aside from the service is that I filled up with fuel at lunch yesterday. It was supposed to be 99 but perhaps it was a gooseberry fool batch. Ill probably take it easy for the rest of the tank and fill up at Shell next time.

Ive also been watching the boost gauge and perhaps its boosting a little less... or perhaps not.

No noises, no smoke.

If there's no noises and no smoke, and nothing apparently wrong besides the power, maybe a good old-fashioned Italian tune-up is in order? Have you driven it in anger recently?

Anyone know if Alfa Romeos are still gooseberry fool in the reliability department?

Ive given it a few pokes, as far as the commute allows. Thats how I know its collecting speed ok.

My only concern in launching it or going very hard is if the fuel is bad, the notoriously fragile EJ25 might just gooseberry fool its arse out if it is indeed bad fuel.

To some extent, luck of the draw. I had my 156 for 13 years from new and overall I'd say it was no worse than any other car. Having said that, test drove a Giulia a few months back and the screen demister wasn't working meaning the salesman had to open and close his window throughout the drive to clear the windscreen.

Still thinking this might be my next car though.....

Not had one personally but my dad had an 2002 Alfa 147 1.6 Twinspark and outside of it using more oil than expected (no idea if it had an issue, or if it was just the nature of the engine) and it going through exterior lights remarkably quickly (comparatively of course, was more like months between them blowing than every other week) it was spot on for him. He bought it in 2011 and got rid about 4 or 5 years later. Was a sad day when he got rid of it but my parents no longer needed two cars and selling my 57 plate Civic so I could buy his 2002 147 probably wouldn't have been the smartest idea. I've looked at buying one many a time since though, just got something about them.

Obviously luck plays a part in these things though, I imagine many a people have had a terrible experience with Alfas in the past and more than likely with all car brands the world over. I definitely wouldn't be against owning an Alfa in the future though :)

Yeah thanks guys, it's interesting - a lot of reviews I've looked at still mention reliability, but user reviews and anecdotal comments seem to suggest they're alright. Reason I'm asking is that I'm eyeing up a Giulietta, but I rely on my car so much that I'm not sure it's worth the gamble...

Do any car manufacturers actually have woeful reliability now anyway? I'd have thought in this day and age no brand would have such poor reliability that it'd regularly leave you stranded at the side of the road.

I think Giulietta looks smart, would you be buying brand new? Do Alfa's still depreciate as quickly as they used to anyway? It does make a second hand Alfa a tempting buy more often than it should.

Anyway my cars in for its MOT tomorrow, hopefully it'll pass, doesn't feel like there's anything wrong with it except for maybe the two front tyre's. They're not down to the tread blocks but I don't think there's loads if life left in them so they'll be getting done in the near future regardless.

I think my car feels fine now. Either bad bit of fuel or in my head.

Car passed, as I expected the front tyre's will need changing in the next month or so. Speaking of tyre's, I've had the car for just under 4 years now, I've never had to have the rear tyre's changed (only changed the fronts once), I can't see in the history I have that the rears have been changed. Planning on keeping it for a couple more years ideally before finally getting something new unless I find something that tempts me away much sooner or something catastrophically goes wrong with it. Would it be worthwhile just getting all 4 tyre's changed, that way the tyre's will at least be good for the rest of the time I have the car or would it not be worthwhile? Tread feels fine on them by the way but I haven't measured it.

Yeah, it could be either way. I think some days my Volvo was a little faster on the throttle but at some days I felt it was slower.

Check your tread indicators to see how much left you've got. It also depends on how much you travel on each week and for example, I had my car service at the end of March and my front tyres were 3.8mm. Since then, I've travelled almost two thousand miles and now the front tyres are 3.7mm. I travel average 200 miles a week on the M6 mostly.

I'll have a better look at the tread on the rears tomorrow. I don't do loads of miles, normally in the region of 150-200 miles each week, commute is roughly about 12.5 miles each way, mix of 60/40/30 limits.

Check these on your tyres.

On my way to work this morning I noticed, in my rear view mirror, some ugly SUV hulk, then I saw a Bentley logo. The hideous thing looked like a damn black cab. I've just googled it, and it's called a Bentayga, and costs over £135,000.

Just look at the bloody thing.

I think all of the SUV crossover type cars look terrible, why not just get a proper 4X4? What makes it worse is that there are so many crossover SUV's out there you see them all the time, every brand has them as they are certainly the in thing right now. Even normal cars are getting slightly SUV inspired versions, the Fiesta and Focus Active for example, who actually thinks these ideas up I don't know.

I’ve seen a couple of those in Cheshire and I think it’s bloody horrible. :dread:
