My immediate reaction was to swerve to the right and put my foot down on the accelerator to evade him. Heard the clunking sound of our wing mirrors touching and he backed off. Looking into my mirror I saw him swerving into the first lane where there was a lorry which he nearly hit too, instead of just going back to the middle lane.

I didn't think much of it as there was no damage so carried on, I actually stopped at the nearest service station which was only about 1 minute away as I needed the toilet. He didn't come in the services though...tbh I don't think he saw me go in as I was speeding ahead of him.

My car is really dirty though, just had it washed and now I can see black marks on my white wing mirror. No dents just marks so hopefully can get it off.

Hang on, don't you drive a bmw? If he's in a van then his mirrors are about 3 foot higher than yours are...
Emojithinkinggif

Are you sure it wasn't your mirror clipping the front wing of his car because you decided you're better off putting your foot down rather than taking avoiding action?

Glad ur ok bbz x

It was one of those small low down vans. Like this

Thank god I wasn't driving in eco mode at the time otherwise the accelerator wouldn't have been quick to react! Sport mode FTW! lol
Sometimes you just have to punch your way through traffic.

On a serious note I just didn't think to brake. I believe it was too late and my body just reacted by increasing speed and letting him see that I am HERE before he hits the front end of my car.

I am a good driver imo. In the above scenario I was the victim! thank you very much! He was lucky I didn't ram him into a 360deg spin lol

Be surprised a car in top gear at 80mph would react quicker than breaking.

Nothing is faster than a bmw reacting to another car potentially being in front of them.

Yes I drive a little one series. It’s only 116i but they have a twin turbo so quite nippy.
If I had slammed the brakes on then I am sure that my car would have wrecked my front end because he was right next to me when he tried moving in hence I was in his blind spot.
I will have to post a diagram later

I am not yet as shocked or appalled by this story in comparison to last year’s boating tragedy, but this may help to swing things.

Its Interesting that you drive around with sports mode engaged and not eco mode on.

Were you in a rush?

If that's the case then how come you didn't get side swiped and only brushed mirrors? Suggests a shallow angle of attack from him and he was going in to that lane normally and you caused it by putting your foot down.

Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 states that the driver of the motor vehicle must stop at the scene of an accident (this includes damage to a person, property or animal), regardless of the severity of the collision or who is to blame.

Failure to do so is punishable with a maximum sentence of six months’ imprisonment, you may also receive a fine.

That is shocking! Well he was in the wrong so I doubt he will call the police. I don't have any of his details.

I guess I should have signalled him and pulled into the hard shoulder or next services...

I was travelling at a constant speed when he moved into me. As soon as he was about to touch my car I made an immediate evasive manoeuvre to avoid him. It was at that point where I increased my speed...the point where he was about to touch my vehicle. I am getting angry thinking about it now lol but wasn't at the time.

Yes I was in a rush but I drive in sports mode a lot...I'd say 60% of the time and other times just comfort mode. I never really ever use eco-mode because it feels too sluggish....not really how a BMW should feel.

I got clipped by an HGV in similar circumstances. It moved out into the right-hand lane when I was about a third of the way along its length, overtaking.

I evasively moved right, onto the rough ground before you hit the barrier, and braked, hard. The very rear of the lorry grazed my front-left wing. I never reported it as I didn't get his details. I was very shaken up, but pleased with my driving.

There is no way - none - that trying to accelerate makes any sense in that situation. I was in my TT (225bhp) and it wouldn't have had the power to get out the way safely, by going faster. I can't imagine many cars on the road actually would be fast enough.

You 99.99% never accelerate out of danger. If you speed up it makes the danger happen faster and harder. You evade if possible, and if not, you brake to slow everything down.

The sports coupe is gone :(

Tax, petrol, insurance just too high and I've been wanting a 5 door for a while.

So I've been looking around for the last few weeks looked at an 06 jag x V6, but other than the 5 doors the petrol and insurance situation wouldn't change.

Went yesterday to see about a C-class, but it was gone by the time I got there, so I might have been sad and bought myself an E-class.

In fact I'd go as far as to say I did buy an E-class.
