Depends on the tyre and how you drive the car. I've had tyres last 10k, but also 50k. For your car it will probably come down to when they have worn down to the legal tread depth, which I would expect 25k plus. If you drive an average of 10k per year I would expect you to get 3 years + from a new tyre. If you drive less than this you may find that the tyre needs to be replaced due to age rather than tyre wear. If you aren't into car maintenance your MOT will give you an idea of how much longer you'll get from them.

Just to show how massively it varies: My last car got 40,000 out of a set of tyres.

Rightey - just arrange a test drive for the Soul. I drove one about 6 years ago and thought it was fine. You just need to decide what you want from a car and then the test drive should tell you if it is a good match for you. My sister has an 8 year old i20 (or could be a 30) and she hasn't had any real problems with it. Of course, this is just one example but if you get the 7 year warranty where you are, reliability shouldn't be a concern.

Why would Hyundai's reliability be an indicator of Kia's?

Hah. Don't know why I thought the i20 was a Kia. I put it down to all those foreign types looking the same.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I will go book a test drive to see how the car actually drives, I think if I do buy it I would stretch the budget a bit and get the 2.0L engine.

Regarding the warranty, I've looked online a bit and don't see anything about a 7 year warranty, they do offer a 5 year that covers basically everything though which seems pretty good.

Lastly I've never bought a new car before, roughly what kind of discount do you guys think I could get by haggling? I can see on the dealerships website they have up to $1000 cash bonus on Soul's, and I would be eligible for another $500 off through their recent graduate discount. Do you think I could get an even better price or are they not likely to budge? Or are they most likely to try and throw in some accessories rather than lower the price?

Yes, you can definitely get a better price. Contact a few different dealers and ask them what is the best price they can give you for the spec you want. You can then use the best price at the dealer you want to use. There is always a deal to be done, don't let them tell you otherwise.

Hyundai and Kia are sister companies of each other aren't they?

The Piccanto and i10 are identical save for a few exterior details.

As are the Venga and ix20.

And the Cee'd and i30 etc

I'd imagine they're as reliable as each other.

Over here we have services such as carwow that you can use to knock loads off the screen price. Might be worth looking to see if you have similar. I'm on my phone now but can type out a fuller explanation of how that works when I'm at my desk in the morning.

He might not have a service there and also Carwow can't be used with all manufacturers. Best thing to do is look around, decide what you think is a fair (and realistic) price and just tell the dealer this is what you want to pay.

So I went to the dealership today, we took a very short test drive, about 10 minutes, but I got a bit of a feel for the car. The engine and transmission are both pretty smooth, I didn't feel any shift shock when it changed up gears, but obviously power was a bit lacking. Unfortunately this dealer didn't have the exact model I wanted, but the car I drove did have the same engine and transmission. It had a few extras though, like rear-back up camera, and a nice touch screen, but I don't think I would stretch to get those, as it would increase the price by about $9K! Oh and the warranty on the car would be 5 Years and unlimited mileage.

I looked into it and there is a service like carwow here called unhaggle, I tried it and the dealer invoice price it gave me was pretty different than what I read on another website about the MSRP being about 10% higher than the Dealer invoice price. Unhaggle said the dealer invoice is only 6% lower than the MSRP!

The Soul EV, the one I want, has an MSRP of $21,495, and a dealer invoice of $20,390, so not really a whole lot of room to negotiate. The website said the average person pays $21,297, so I guess if I can get another $100 it would be pretty good.

I would also be eligible for $1500 in rebates, which after tax and all fees, I think I would be looking at about $22,456 for a new Soul.

I also went and saw a 2014 Ford Escape, 2L Ecoboost 4cyl Titanium. It's got 61,000km's and they're asking $20,000. The only thing is that it's had a "miscellaneous" insurance claim filed on it for $5000. Apparently this means it may have been in a fender bender, or been side swiped, but I guess it was nothing major. It was a very nice car, and very well equipped but that insurance claim is giving me pause for concern. There were some other Escapes there for similar prices without any claims on them but they were also lower spec'd. With a 2014, I would have warranty until 2018, or 100,000km's.

I still want to check out some other small SUV's but not really sure what to do. The Ford was a lot nicer, and bigger than the Soul, but the Soul will be hassle free due to the warranty. I think I need to go on some more test drives to see what feels better.

Can't follow your logic there at all. Ignoring Rightey's subsequent post, you've guessed at whether or not they have a similar service, assumed it won't work with the manufacturers in question, and then said the best thing to do is to make up your own price and go in with that.

At its best, Carwow takes about 2 minutes and gives you firm prices for new cars that you can use as a haggling tool/starting point. In my experience these are usually a good few grand of MSRP. If you're a serious buyer, your dealer won't want to lose your custom, and it gives you an idea of what could be achieved.

Just doing that gives your 'made up' price some substance/credibility. I can't see why you wouldn't do it for the sake of a few minutes' work on the internet.

I've used Carwow before (and actually I was the person who first mentioned it in this topic) and the saving you get is car dependent. When I was looking around for my BRZ I couldn't use Carwow because that wasn't a manufacturer it worked with. I did use it to see what I could get a GT86 for but you certainly don't save a few grand, it was just a few hundred (I think £500 was the most). I wasn't suggesting that he makes up a price (hence my comment on realistic). If you contact the dealers yourself (just by e-mail) and ask for their best price (I actually did this when I bought my Alfa many years ago, the manual version of Carwow) you get exactly what Carwow gives you. I guess my point was that Carwow doesn't cover all manufacturers and if you put in the effort, you can get a better deal anyway. When I bought my BRZ I offered just over £2k less than the list price and after 10 minutes considering, the dealer accepted.

Ok, fair enough. I guess there are rivals to Carwow, too (below): I think you just need to know what routes are available and exploit everything you can.

There was something similar in the UK years ago (actually around the time I bought my Alfa so Carwow probably stole the idea). The only difference was you phoned the place, told them what you wanted and they came back to you with the dealer who would provide the best price.

*edit* Remembered the name, it was Autobytel. Interestingly, if you search for it you find Inchcape which is a pretty big company that has dealerships for many manufacturers. I bought our Audi from them and they gave a 15% discount off list price for the car and all accessories.

Don't do it. It is acceptable only on a Dodge Viper or AC Cobra.

Don't do it.

Just get a tin of paint, that way you can also make sure the stripe runs down the window (which looks very cool and most of these stripe kits miss). You should definitely do this for identification purposes.

Oh look, here comes that banana split who pushed in the other day when I was waiting at the junction.
