I thought they packed that in when the RX8 died

I guess they were still making the engine for some reason. Parts?

I thought they'd canned it too. As much as I admire their perseverance with 'alternative' engine tech, it clearly didn't make a whole lot of sense.

The RX8 was unreliable (or, rather, prone to the entire engine just going kaput) and the VED was mental.

Yet the design, balance and body shell was magnificent. Why the hell they don't try to bring it back with conventional engine is beyond me.

It wasnt especially prone to the engine dying, it just required a unique form of maintenance.

Still, gives me an opportunity to post this cutaway of the rotary combustion cycle:

Tomayto, tomarto, surely? I wouldn't touch an RX8 that hadn't had a rebuild now.

No, not really. If you ran it how it was supposed to be run then it will be quite happy for quite some time. If you ran it like a conventional piston engine then it wont be happy, because it isnt a piston engine.

Can anyone recommend a clay and lube kit?

I've been doing a bit of reading about detailing and I'm not that happy with the wash and wax I did the other weekend. I was thinking about giving it a good wash, claying it and then putting some Gtechniq C2 (just because it seems much easier to apply than wax).

My amazing Hyundai Getz.

Thought it would be a good car to try it on because I don't really care if something goes wrong.

There are now clay mitts which I'm looking into as it looks easier and quicker than claying.

Just looked at those. Tempting. There's no point me spending too much time on mine anyway: it's not been cleaned for over a year and still says 'sexy' on the bonnet.

Might give it an initial wash this weekend to make sure none of the dirt is load-bearing, then look at those mitt things.

Claying doesn't look very difficult or like it takes very long, so I don't really see the point in those mitts.

I'm just going to wash my car with something to take the wax off it, clay it and then seal it with some Gtechniq C2. Gonna clay the windows, too.

It hasn't been particularly well taken care of so I'm interested to see how it turns out and how good I can make it look without any paint correction.

From what I understand claying takes forever and you have to be careful not to drop it or get any grit at all in it.

From what I've read and seen it should never take more than an hour. More like half an hour.

The finish looks worth it.

I guess it takes less time if you're doing a car that's the size of a suitcase.

I took a 320d out for a spin today which was great fun and much better to drive than the A5. The handling is feels nigh on perfect.

I got to drive a C220 for a bit as well, but not enough to make much of a comparison. But at the low speeds I got to drive it at, it felt comparable despite having that distinct Merc "silent spaceship" feel to it.

Are these brand new cars you're looking at? Because I have to say, the front end of the new Mercs is absolutely spot on. I was driven in a client's new 220 CLS last week and it was lovely inside, too. Decent amount of shove for the basic spec, as well.
