Is that still a thing? I thought it was Audi drivers these days.

I've got a BMW and I'm quite the gentleman of the road.

Although I got a speeding ticket from Belgium last month. Apparently I was doing 123 kmh when I should have been doing 120. Quite shameful.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Anecdotally it's definitely BMW and Audi drivers. Also Skoda Octavia and Vauxhall Insignia drivers.

That's a leftfield shout, but I'm seeing it loads at the moment. Seeing a lot of ex-rep mobiles being driven by scummers, too. Remapped 2.0 diesels chucking tonnes of black crap out every time they floor it off a roundabout in a built-up area.

In my own experience, it's definitely always BMW drivers that are banana splits. They drive too aggressively and showy-offy, always up your arse desperate to zoom past because hey move it little man I'm driving a BMW flash flash. The sense of self-importance and superiority over drivers is palpable, even when it's just a bog standard rep mobile saloon. Well done you drive a BMW, that doesn't mean you own the road. They're also the car of choice for wannabe gangster dickheads that cruise round estates looking for people to look at them so they can shout "what u lookin at m8" and then zoom off like twats.

I realise this is a generalisation and there are probably lots of nice BMW drivers out there, but strawberry float it stereotypes exist for a reason.

It's focus RS at peak banana split, followed by Audi and narrowly BMW behind them

But there are so many more BMWs out there then RS and ST Fords. They're so common, seems like every other dickhead is driving a beamer these days so the twatishness is that much more obvious and irritating.

Alright boys, its everybodies favourite game time: What Car?

Bird needs new wheels. Currently has a Beetle, its gooseberry fool, falling apart, she hates it. She got it as it was the only thing she could insure, but its been a few years and she can move on.

Criteria:

Petrol
Fairly economical
Would prefer if it had a 6th gear and more than 50bhp so she can use it for motorway runs
Probably not a supermini
Smallish 5-door

She really likes the Juke (yes I have considered ending our relationship over this), and the Mini.

She wont listen to me about the glory of a Dacia because she thinks they look gooseberry fool (phillistine) and she wont let me get her a Forester STI. Realistically shes on a telematic box and doesnt drive fast. I think she wants something easy to drive that looks nice for her and is safe but interesting.

If she buys it she'll be getting from trade on finance probably at a total cost of like 5-6k but not much more. If there is one of these amazing lease deals for an AMG for like £100 that every banana split aside from me seems to find then Id consider that too.

What dyall think?

We have a duke :dread: It was got as a lease for the long commute I used to have so got purely on it's 75mpg, which it does actually achieve. I call it the u ok cunt-mobile

Much as I hate to admit it though, it's a good car. Does near 500 miles on a £45 tank, 6 years, cruise control, cameras, sensors and all that bollocks.

Sorry slow reply, had some bad news. Anyway..

I have suggested Alfa's to her quite a few times. I suggested it to her again and she wasnt sure, then I showed her a picture of a Brera, and now shes looking at Alfa's too. She likes the Mito and Giulietta. I think the Mito would be ideal, but the interior specification doesnt look fantastic to me. Giuletta is obviously better but Im not sure its worth the price increase. I will take her to a Mangoletsi and we'll try a few out, maybe they are better than the pics.

Mazda 6 no. Too big.

Looking at older Jukes I just think they look shite inside. Really cheap and shite. We were talking to someone with a manual 5-speed and they said its awful for motorways, so we'd need a 6-speed and the price at that point becomes a bit more than I feel the car is worth. Anything above base spec and the price piles on rapidly.

By the sounds of it she'll smash it up within hours so the juke might end up looking better after a week or two.

See thats why I suggested all these rugged things with the plastic mouldings and stuff. I think they are cool because they are utilitarian but she thinks they look shite. I also think that replacing plastic mouldings will be nicer than resprays and body work.

As far as electric cars go they don't look bad, prefer the look of their sports ev concept myself though.....

Anyway how about a Polo? Sure some of them have 6 speed gearboxes anyway but I'm not sure what MPG they claim to get.

What's the benefit of a 6th gear supposed to be? Never had more than 5 on any car I've had and they've all been fine on the motorway.

Surely it is the gear ratios that matter, not how many of them you have?

Presume its just because it'll have lower rev's when at motorway speed so better economy as opposed to a car in 5th. Gear ratios do help but I guess a 6th gear is preferable if you do a lot of motorway miles.

But surely we're just in a Spinal Tap "these go to 11" situation? There's no reason why the 5th Gear in Car B can't be just as efficient for motorway driving as the 6th Gear in Car B - if what you care about is MPG then look at MPG, not numbers of gears surely?
