Some of the rooms have laminate already, but the carpet the old owners put in is coming off so I want to get rid as easily as possible.

Do not do this if the carpets are around 10 years or more old, the foam underneath is disintegrated and toxic.

Also there will be random tiling, fireplaces and other broken stuff underneath so be prepared for it to not actually all be floorboards, also they creak like crazy.

For me I would say laminate, preferably real wood, with Hungarian rugs.

Im in rental with carpets now and they are basically ruined after 6 months and my workshop is totally flattened because I have a proper metal frame/stand chair with wheels I work on, it's literally a pancake. I've considered just putting panel flooring over it.

But surely the best thing is linoleum. Top stuff.

They're not that old, the other owners only had the house for a few years and did all the modernisation etc. From what I've seen underneath the underlay is intact, although that's obviously from pulling up the edges and not the middle. It's just a really poorly put down carpet! My cat has been pulling it up

The hallway is the priority because of the loose carpet on the stairs, the carpeted bedroom and front room are holding up a lot better. Obviously a great strawberry float off hole would be an issue, but the fact is I'll need to pull it up if I laminate it anyway so it could be one job or job one of two

Just kidding, I hate lino with a passion. It's the bane of renters and 90s kids with dented, hideously discoloured, wobbly, sticky and squidgy floors everywhere. Anyone who thinks lino is a great idea, is either stupid or a thundering asshole.

It's cleaner than your keyboard which is why you have carpet in the bathroom and no carpet on your keyboard. Science. 8-)

I have wood flooring in my house. I wish I had carpets.

At least in my bedroom/sitting room area. Oh well, the wood is nice.

I have carpet in the living room and bedroom; wood/laminate (I don't know which :fp: ) in the hallway, and tiles in the bathroom.

Oh, and really old lino in the kitchen :datass: .

Carpet is a major pain in the ass if you have pets.

I'd imagine wood is a pain in the ass all the time no matter what.

Can't understand why everyone wouldn't want nice quality carpet everywhere but bathrooms and kitchens.

Wood is easily and quickly cleaned. If you spill something on a carpet, especially liquid, you better have a steam cleaner on hand otherwise you will have a permanent stain. Add to that the fact the colour will fade over time, and the thing will get worn out. Hardwood will be good for years and if it does end up getting damaged is a fairly easy job to re-finish

Wood scuffs, is harder to get stains out than carpet, its cold and hard. You are basically stuck with it till you come to your senses and get rid.

Carpet might wear out over time (and with decent carpet we are talking a long time) but then you get to change to something else.

Never had use for a steam cleaner or had a stain that wouldn't come out of good quality carpet with a stain guard on it.

At the end of the day carpet is just nicer to walk on and is more practical for most people (I accept there are cases in which it might not be).
