I still don't really understand how all of this is happening. Is Apple's security really this lax, and why hasn't anyone focused on it?
The accounts could have been hacked years ago and the images are only being released now as whoever had access may have wanted to wait until they were blocked before releasing the images they'd stolen.
It's not just Apple either, services like Google Photos, OneDrive, Flickr etc. can all have access to your camera roll.

Indeed and most of the hacks have come from basic fake emails asking them to reset their password and taking them to a fake link.
