I'm looking at changing my broadband, TV and phone package as I've recently borrowed a load of money and the £100 a month to Sky is starting to look bit pricey.

Anyway, my question is that a lot of the deals seem to be for first time customers; as there are only four main providers of internet, TV and phone I'm assuming that moving supplier is a a one time thing with regards to getting the best deal?

Probably. As with most things, they put a good rate out there for new members only, gradually hike up the price each year, and bank on people not bothering to change. Switching every year is the best way to get the best deal, in all sorts of areas (insurance, breakdown cover, TV/phone, etc).

You could always call your current supplier and tell them you're thinking of leaving - they'll most likely be able to knock a considerable amount off, due to you being a 'loyal customer' or some bullshit. Sometimes that can be as good as - if not better - than the introductory price.

Sorry what I was trying to say was that if I leave Sky this year and go with BT, next year can I use a comparison site and go back to Sky on one of their 'new customer only' deals. I suppose in all likelihood I will get lots of "We miss you" letters and e-mails.

Call Sky and say you are thinking of leaving because of the cost and they will give massive discounts.

I think you have to leave Sky for 12 months before qualifying for a 'new customer' deal. Pretty sure I've read that on their site somewhere.

What about O2 customers that got bought out? As far as I'm aware I never actually signed a contract with Sky and so I don't really understand how I count as an existing customer. They said something about cancelling the contract and signing up again as a new customer to take advantage of deals, which I didn't do at the time because hassle. But now I'm on about £24 a month for 16mb ADSL when they were offering fibre for something like £8/m for a few months as a new customer.

I might try calling them up and just saying, please explain to me why I should stay with Sky when you yourself are offering 3x the speed at about a third of my current price. At no point did I opt into any of this stuff, and I did not have any say in my contract being bought out. Now that fibre is available, I want an opportunity to use it, which they have not done. They're just making more money out of me this way.

If you call their bluff, then Sky will match pretty much whatever you want. But you have to have conviction, and be prepared to follow through.

They'll say they can't do it, and you then have to agree to cancel.

About a week before the cancellation date they will cal you with a miraculous new deal that fits your demands.

They're buggers. I'm actually about to do the same thing today.

I did have unlimited Broadband, 2 sky boxes, and Phone line for £35, and that has suddenly shot up to £55 as the discount ran out last month. I'm going to try for the same plus fibre for £35 and see where that get's me.

I was on O2 Broadband and just a couple of days before the switch to Sky I rang Sky up and basically asked for a deal. I am paying £15.something per month for line rental and unlimited broadband (because that's the deal I had with O2). I asked the lady on the phone to total up my basic annual O2 bill and it still worked out cheaper than Sky, so Sky gave me a £40 credit! With these things Gecko you have to ask. My suggestion is you give Sky a call and say you didn't know about the switch, say you only use your phone line for internet and tell them you want my deal.

Yeah I will give them a ring and just make some stuff up about leaving, maybe i can at least get fibre for the same money.

In other news, my electric company owes us over £600 credit.

Let us know how you get on. I've always wanted to do it but worry that sky will never call back begging for me if I cancel. I don't want to leave sky as none of the other providers offer the tv service that I enjoy.
