It was mentioned in the Rock Band thread at some point that the customisable characters in Rock Band 4 were a late addition in the development process because Harmonix didn't think people actually cared about making your own character. In a game where the whole gimmick of it is it's you, but a rockstar. Weren't people a bit irritated by how dodgy the GTA5 online character creator was because you couldn't actually design your character?

The poll here also seems to imply that actually, not many people do just leave it as the default... So who are Rare asking?

I'm the same as Gemini, too. I don't really pay much attention to big open world games if I can't customise who I'm playing as :shifty: It's mainly why I haven't bothered with the GTA5 single player.

I tend to make an effort with the customisation options, and then got bored and just go with the default.

Having read Rare’s approach to Sea of Thieves, I approve, I think it’s quite a good solution and one I would prefer using.

Didn't know whether to vote for 'a representation of yourself' or 'the most ridiculous looking character you can create' because for me it's the same. :(

If it's a game with a clear main protagonist, like Geralt or Commander Shepard or something, I'd stick with them, even if there's room for creating your own character (I like being able to customiser their outfit/armour/etc though).

If it's something like Skyrim, where you're pretty nameless/faceless anyway, I'll probably try and create something that looks vaguely like me - tall, blond, heavily muscled, handsome... :datass:

Tall with a beard, like me. My haircut with my colour. Handsome obviously. That’s all I’m ever arsed to do.

If it’s possible then yes

I spend ages on character creation

Depending on how seriously I am taking the game, either a design that matches the kind of character I want to roleplay, or just the most ridiculous looking creature the sliders will allow for. I voted for the latter in the poll as "in universe realism and/or character roleplay" wasn't an option ;)

For me it depends, sometimes I make a person with similar features to me, sometimes I make random gooseberry fool, others I stick with the default. Really depends on my mood at the beginning of a game.

This is a good point, I do often make characters absolutely nothing like me or eachother - just because I feel they better fit the role I want to portray them as.

The only game I've played that I can think of with true character customisation is Xenoblade Chronicles X (and even that was light compared to others I believe). Went for just a version of myself - even kept glasses on as part of my gear to be more accurate.

Depends on the game. I usually always play as a dude on my first playthrough, and try to make them fit the setting (basically made a Van Helsing/Undertaker looking guy in Bloodborne, for instance). However, I will sometimes stick with the default if its clear to me that you can't really make anything that looks as good as it with the creator e.g. I will always picture Shepard in Mass Effect with the default male appearance.

3 options:
1) default, if the character creation tools are annoying
2) to fit the 'build' im going for, e.g. a strength user in Dark Souls, ill make them look a bit beefier than a dex one, sometimes mix it up for some variety like a big nimble guy, or a tiny person with massive strength etc.
3) if the game takes itself really seriously, or is a comedy game ill often make a ridiculous looking character for fun

dont really go for making them look like me because it just gets frustrating and it never actually ends up looking at all the same

I spent almost 4 hours with creating my character in Monster Hunter >,> Usually, I'll try to get an understanding of the world and story before hand so I can create someone that fits the world I will be in.
