Interesting quote from the Sea Of Thieves thread.

Rare made the point that in many other games of this nature, players often simply stick with the default skin

So what do you do?

I tend to pick a woman if possible.

There just isn't enough women in gaming.

I'll usually pick the preset I like best and modify it from there.

Except in Saints Row where I'll create the freakiest looking bastard I can.

If it's single player I tend to start off with customisation then get bored half-way through.

Online I'll try and make something I think looks interesting. My favourite was in the Division where I decided I would go for the most colourful over the top outfit I could. Ended up with dayglo orange jumpsuit and a bobble hat.

If it's an offline game I pick a woman with the rare exception being I'm a female spartan in Halo 5 mp but they don't look too different. Online I have to be a dude because gamers are idiots.

I vary between trying to make a character that looks like me and just making some random avatar to use. One thing that does annoy me is when you can change armour but its not worth wearing anything other than the best armour so it doesnt matter what your character looks like, theyll have the same armour and weapon as everyone else who plays the game. Skyrim stands out in my mind as an offender here, the only reason to not wear Dragon armour is that you really hate the look of it.

I like the system in Xenoblad Chronicles X though, you have your battle gear that gives you stat boosts etc and you have fashion gear that will hide the battle gear if you equip it. This lets you have the combat bonues of the good armour but you can actually see your character and have them look any way you want.

Usually a black man with an afro in women's clothes and makeup.

God knows what that says about me

Depends on the game, but generally I'll either create a representation of myself or a female character.

All RPGs should come with character creation. Not really a fan of RPGs that come with a preset character, like, for example, The Witcher.

Geralt is amazing though.

His comic timing in some cut scenes is genuinely laugh out loud funny.

I usually go default, with maybe a couple of personalisations. Because the defaults have been designed by professionals, and look better than any shite I could come up with.

Also: strawberry float vanity.

I'm sure Vanity has anything to do with picking a character that looks like yourself....

On FIFA I tend to make the "be a pro" mode player look like me (but obviously more athletic and less poor), but on RPGs I'll normally just go with either the default or "generic strongman". On Skyrim, for example, on all my playthroughs of it I've never not been a Nord with a Sword.

I re-did my Mass Effect character so many times I must have spent at least an hour on that screen.

So yes, I do use them.

Who got bored with what he could afford.

Depends on the game and the tools it has.

Sure he's a well written character, absolutely. I just prefer to create my own character for an RPG rather than have one already fleshed out.

Most of my skyrim mods dont work if you're not a girl so my choice is already made

I usually spend hours and hours making and remaking and restarting the game to get it just right. Its probably no coincidence that in the games with the most robust customisation options I get so sick of the start that I almost never finish the game. Dragons Dogma is a recent example.

I usually pick women though Im not against picking men either. I tend to go for more realism if I can rather than sex appeal.
