Some people are moaning about the cost of mid life console upgrades but I think this gen is actually pretty cheap.
Let's take a worst case scenario of someone who buys all the consoles on launch that's PS4, Pro, Xbox, Scorpio and Switch.
I have a feeling that little lot will still end up being cheaper or at most only slightly more (with inflation taken into account) than for example someone who bought an Atari ST and an Amiga and that money is spread out over time and with a larger selection of games.
I have a PS4 and Pro and am fairly sure I'm going to get a Scorpio and considering that little lot is going to last me though 7 years of solid gaming I'm pretty happy with that and again that's buying at launch so I could have spent even less by just waiting for price drops.

So am I mad in thinking that prices now are actually not terrible?

PS3 launch was madness, PS4 was much much more reasonable.

It's the games and accessories (like controllers) that are expensive

Oh I completely agree controller prices are strawberry floating mental. £50 for a PS4 pad are they taking the piss I remember I got pissed off paying £10 for a joystick for the Atari ST and as for the pro controllers unless they have the ability to teleport delicious and varied cheeses directly to me every Sunday for my delectation they can sod off.

I don't mind them, for the hardcore they have a chance to upgrade but for the rest there is price drops for the older versions.

I picked up a Wii U last week for over €100 less than it was the week before because of the switch, ill probably do the same for the switch in a few years. It's ok for me to do that because Nintendo games age rather well.

I'm probably getting a Scorpio at launch but im not sure ill get the console after that, I'll probably wait for the Xbox Scorpio + 2 as it were.

Something that always grated with me was the price of the official Sony memory cards for the PS2. They were £20 on launch and stayed that price for the consoles lifecycle. It seemed the console and all other peripherals got price cuts but those cards never shifted in price. I reckon Sony must have made a fortune of the back of those alone.

And then PSP and Vita continued the PS2 memory card legacy

When I first got a ps2 in 2005 the memory cards were sold out everywhere and it took me ages to get one, they never dropped because people needed them.

People paid £50 for snes games. I think it's OK, especially if you can be a bit patient.

Accessories cost silly money now but the games and systems themselves are cheaper than they've ever been, not only that but it's far easier to find a bargain now thanks to the internet and prices seem to drop much more quickly than they ever have done before. It's a pretty good time to be a gamer, people just like to moan.

Games have always been quite expensive.

> Early 80s - Atari VS cartridges were £29.99
> Mid 80s - 8-bit computer games could be from £1.99 (Mastertronic, Firebird et al  ) to £9.99; ST games up to £19.99; Amiga games up to > £24.99; NES and Master System games around £24.99
> Early 90s - Mega Drive games around £39.99; SNES games around £49.99
> Mid to late 90s - PS games around £44.99; N64 games around 54.99; Dreamcast games around £44.99
> Early 2000s - PS games from £19.99 to £29.99; PS2, GC and Xbox games around £39.99
> Late 2000s - PS3 and Xbox 360 games around £39.99
> Now: PS4 and XBO games around £42 (online) or £55 (download); but season passes are around £20 to £40 per game. Indie titles circa £14

I'm a bit uncomfortable with how pricing has changed even so far this year; "AAA" titles that include season passes are now being priced at £79.99 to £89.99 on the digital stores  (   ).

To be honest, it's clear that one should now never buy a game at launch. Aside from server issues, bugs and incomplete games, you may as well wait three months and get the game at a substantial discount. I need to learn this lesson :fp: .

PS4 games are all 70-75 euro, and show no signs of getting cheaper. It takes about a year before even 2nd hand copies hit a reasonable price. Ive bought barely any games, id literally buy maybe 1-2 per year for the PS4 as its jsut way, way too expensive. If it wasnt for cheap Steam games id probably have given up gaming altogether this gen. Case in point, Resi 7, 29.99 on PC, 74.99 ON PS4. Its insanity.

Meanwhile on planet earth, I'm finding PS4 games fall to £20 quite quickly.

Oh im sorry, i guess i was living in strawberry floating planet shitfuck doesnt know how to read a price tag over here when i walked into CEX this strawberry floating Saturday and saw UFC 2, a year old game, still selling for 60 euro.

Chill. In the UK you can get PS4 games for £20 a month or so after release. So just an expensive gen for you and whoever lives near you, but not this generation as a whole.
CEX is a joke anyway, their prices are the same as new, everywhere by the sound of it.
