I've been discussing this on rllmuk as well and the general opinion seems to be that £60 for 3 people a month in the colder months is very good and that I have been lied to a lot. Basically I have been fed gooseberry fool like how the dehumidifier apparently costs £1.50 an hour to use (at that energy rate the dehumidifier would be high voltage and anyone who touches it would risk bursting into flames) or that when cooking a 69p ready meal the energy use puts the cost of the meal closer to £2. All of these have been debunked and it looks like I was being told lies about how much energy these things use.

Sounds like it. Sorry buddy, students are clueless when it comes the energy usage and are always trying to blame each other, I know. The truth is, energy these days is alarmingly expensive, I have seen it increase a lot over the past 4 or 5 years. It is one of those hard things you have to make allowances for, we live a very privileged lifestyle with all sorts of electronic appliances and gizmos and every little bit adds up.

Re the kettle that is quite funny. In order to boil water in a matter of seconds you need a lot of power. Just think how long it takes to bring water to the boil on even a large stove. Yup, strawberry floating ages. I reckon together your mates' constant pot noodle making (which is gooseberry fool nutrition) is together using more energy than your single stove or so of making a proper meal.

If you really wanted to save you could cook together on the stove stuff like casserole but fat chance of that happening.

Might be worth doing a comparison online with other suppliers just in case. But £60 for 3 people is quite cheap.

We were billed, no gooseberry fool, £120 in electric one month. This was spark energy and one of us was still studying (a couple in a 1 bed house!! Impossible!)

That is when you gooseberry fool your pants over direct debit robbery.

Our account ended over 400 quid in credit. We canceled the direct debit because we were being mugged and our meter readings virtually ignored. This put us on the more expensive non direct debit tariff that was even more of a rip off, so they just took the money put of our credit each month. We ended the account with 100 quid.

That's right, 300 quid for a few months usage. Absolutely robbery. I still need to fight for that back.

He only thinks it's expensive because it was only £30 last month. Keep in mind one of them didn't even move in until a week before the bill came in. So if anything the September-October bill is cheap because:
Zero heating use.
Everyone moving in late because the landlord wanted to redecorate.
Me living on my own for about 5 days.
3rd person moving in on the last week.

To have concerns about the bill doubling is pretty silly when taking that into account.

It is.

You together need to anticipate much higher usage and if you want to be pro you set aside this money each month, even if you don't use all of it.

Your lead tenant bill guy or whatever can even take that and then reimburse you the difference, but you might not know these people very well.

Bill sharing strawberry floating sucks unless you are already living with friends (I had the Fortune of making great friends in halls and then living with no strangers at least until my final retake year where we had a meter).

Tell them you asked some graduates. They need to man up. gooseberry fools expensive and tight you.

Less booze and video games. And learn to cook, jesus.
