Cheats, hacks, secret codes or daft inclusions. For reasons unclear devs just don’t seem to put cheat codes in their games anymore. So I wondered what your favourite or most memorable cheat was? A few from memory:

- The multitude of codes for Die Hard Trilogy including making the plants in the Nakatomi building scream when shot and the months-long quest by PowerStation magazine to unlock the UFO vehicle.

- DOKI PEN, the code to make the game easier on Action Fighter on the Master System.

- Figuring out the mysterious ANDREAS password for Nuclear Strike worked as a level skip but only if you had completed the previous level normally.

IGOTPINKACIDBOOTSON for Alien Trilogy (I think).

But nothing beats the days of the Spectrum, when we used POKEs to directly overwrite bits of the game’s code.

James Pond, right at the start of the game you have 5 items that you need to collect in a certain order to spell CHEAT to get invincibility.

I can’t remember what Tomb Raider it was, probably the first one, but if you made her move in a certain order she’d blow up.

Codemasters games used to always be packed with cool cheats. Colin McRae rally had jelly cars, being abducted by aliens, back to the future pt2 style flying car mode.

Felt like there was a period where every game had to have a BIG HEAD mode.

The first games I had were Sonic 1 and 2 on the Megadrive and I remember struggling to input some of those cheat codes, like the level select ones  :fp:
In my defence I was only 5 or 6, but still

I used codes in Doom quite a bit - invincibility, no clipping, all weapons, etc.

I don't think I really knew about any others until the Playstation and N64 era. Obviously Goldeneye springs to mind, and the cheat codes that eventually came out (strawberry float doing Facility in less than 2:15 or whatever it was). I think there were some in GTA 1 and 2 to get a tank or all weapons or something, but no others really stick out in my mind.

On the PS2 I remember using codes in GTA 3 to mess around with the tank. That was probably the first 3D 'sandbox' like that, so getting certain cars or just creating chaos with the tank was great.

There are a few reasons that basically come down to "online multiplayer" and "microtransactions".

Remember unlocking all the characters with a cheat? Now you need to earn in-game currency online to keep you playing, or pay real money for the battle pass. Funny costume change cheat? That's a purple rarity skin now, please buy some loot boxes. A cheat to level up? Sorry, you need to preorder the game to get an xp booster.

The PS2 GTAs were great for cheats, as already mentioned, but I think my favourite game for cheats might be Rogue Squadron on N64. You could unlock the Naboo Starfighter before Phantom Menace had come out! There was even a secret 2 player co-op level where you both share the controls of an AT-ST.

If you type 'TOMATOES' into the first level of Novastorm on the PC you warp to secret level packed with power-ups.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Spawn camping the awesomely overpowered AA vehicle in the first year of Battlefield 4.

Self guiding AA missiles with hefty damage made being a pilot a misserable experience.
I loved it :shifty: :slol: .

Unlocked all the tracks. Not that I would ever resort to such villainy.
