Chris Cornell has died

Listening to one genre is mad, plus there's so much music that defies categorisation entirely.

Yeah. I've got that as well. Not sure what it is about Sweet Oblivion, there's almost a 60s psychedelic rock thing going on. I just think it's magnificent.

I never get people who "don't like rock music" but listen to the Prodigy. Similar example, my sister and her husband hate Metallica but quite happily put on a drum and bass tune that sampled Orion. Most people in that dance bracket would love rock music if they gave it a proper chance.

I've been championing the similarities between rock music and dance music for years now but nobody seems to see (or rather hear) it but me. They are both generally fast, aggressive forms of music driven largely by heavy drums and bass lines. The fact that you have an act like Pendulum covering Master of Puppets and various dance acts incorporating live guitars and drums into their gigs surely supports this idea.

I never understood just listening to one genre. Back in 96 when I got Down on the Upside, that summer I was also loving Jilted Generation and Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg.
I was at the gym last night pumping some French techno by Danger and now listening to one of my favorite alt rock albums of all time, source tags and code by Trail of Dead. There's so much amazing music in the world, limiting yourself to being "just into dance music" seems crazy to me.

I guess some people just don't like a lot of Music. Like myself. I listen to a few bands, like Ozma, Metallica and Nightwish, but dance is just noise to me, I hate rap, pop is gooseberry fool and so on.

I hate it when people try to say it's this genre or this. If you enjoy it, does it really matter?

I went to Marilyn Manson over Cornell in 2009. Manson was easily the worst performance I've ever seen. Appalling.

It's a mistake I'll never rectify, now. Shame.

I was there for that. I was a big Manson fan at the time and had seen them live once before at Leeds Festival '01 which to this day is one of my favourite gigs of all time but their Download '09 performance was an embarrassment.

Death by hanging seems to be the word.

I used to be one of them. Back in my early/ mid twenties I wouldn't even entertain the thought of rock music. I was raving it up in Ibiza or down the local club Lakota. Now, I listen to rock, dance...... or a whole spectrum of music to be honest.

strawberry float, this is sad news - Soundgarden was a great band, and Jesus Christ Pose an absolutely superb song.

That's why I asked first, I got the feeling it wouldn't be cool but thought I'd test the water. But for the record unless I knew the deceased personally I wouldn't mind someone cracking wise about someone I looked up to.

It's a hugely diverse genre, surely there's something you'd like.

I do love me some Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Prodigy, Justice, Danger, Aphex Twin and Squarepusher (to go with my rock - Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, QOTSA, Alice in Chains, Tool, Audioslave, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Led Zeppelin and White Stripes to name a few).

For what it's worth on a forum where a similar thread quickly devolved into insulting the deceased's sister and pointing out that because he was a twin his parents had a spare I find it hard to be vilified for something I didn't even post.

Christ, if I'm all those things simply for thinking something inappropriate Frankie Boyle must be strawberry floating Hitler.

Nah don't like any you mentioned, and with the band's you mentioned most of them I like a few songs at most. I like little music.

Damn, I could never get into Soundgarden but 'Audioslave' is one of my favourite albums. A unique voice, and such a waste.

Horrible, horrible news. The last song he played was about death. It looks like the stage where he played last is being used as a memorial with his Vox/GFX rig intact and people are delivering flowers. It really hits home how you can never be 100% about how people are coping, and how isolated famous performers can become. Success really isn't the greatest thing. Contentment and happiness are much more important and mutual love are so much more important.

I almost died after playing a gig about 10 years ago. There is nothing romantic about this.

This is the end of a long struggle, however abrupt the outcome. Anyone thinking of ending their life should not be afraid of seeking help. We have a place here for that which isn't hard to find and if anyone is personally affected in the way public displays of suicide often are, please feel free to PM me about it.

His cover of Billie Jean is spine-tinglingly good. Such a shame
