When I try and start the game it says "Please login with administrator privileges and try again" even though I am the administrator.
When I right click and run as admin, the screen flashes black (as if it's going to load) and then flashes black again and then nothing happens.
Reinstalling the game doesn't work.
All patches are up-to-date, although when I tried downloading and installing the latest patch just to be sure, it says no version of Civ IV is on my PC, even though it clearly is.

(both of which were posted fairly recently) it seems the issue is with a recent Windows Update. However I don't understand how to implement the fix they're proposing.

Ypu can uninstall certain updates. I can take you through it if you cant find it online.

But aren't those updates essential?

Not really. Uninstalling a broken update until they fix it wont break your computer.

Dumb suggestion: right click on game link > Run As Administrator?

Have you tried disabling the User Access Control service with start > type "msconfig"? It is only necessary for noobs.

That's the gooseberry fool that makes the screen blink and ask for gooseberry fool to make changes to your computer.

Just don't install random crap and keep java, flash and your browser up to date to avoid trojans.

Control Panel > Windows Update > Installed Updates > Find broken update, click and uninstall.

Did that fix your problem?

Sorry Qikz - I haven't had chance to give it a try. I will, though, and I'll let you know. Thanks for your help!

Hey Qikz - I didn't try the fix in the end - the fantastic Super Dragon 64 has gifted me the game on Steam.

And the people at 2K support, in return for a photo of the disc and case, have given me a Steam code for the complete Civ disc that I own - meaning I now have Beyond the Sword again.

If anyone else ventures here with this same problem, go here - http://support.2k.com/hc/en-us (you'll need to register but it costs you nothing and will probably get you your game back) - and submit your issue. Assuming they treat your problem the same as mine, they'll ask for a photo of the disc and case with your email address written on paper next to it. They'll send you a Steam code.

Just wanted to let you know that this helped to fix my issue with Sim City 4 Deluxe.

It was weird, though, I tried to create the two batch files that are suggested on the civfanatics forums:



But those didn't work, they gave me an error about secdrv not being on my machine, so I went and uninstalled the Windows updated which should enable secdrv. After doing this the game now runs. Next I decided to try and use the script to disable secdrv, since they mentioned it was a security issue, so after disabling it I tried running the game expecting for it to not work, however it still functions.

Now I don't know what to do, should I just leave it disabled or enabled?
