Classic FM will run an hour-long show on videogame music for six weeks starting April 22nd, Saturdays 9-10pm

This is an interesting turn-up, I remember several years ago people block-voted some music from Final Fantasy into their annual top 100 chart but this is a welcome development. I probably won't listen live but will certainly catch it on iplayer.

Radio Garden is pretty handy for listening to radio online, has pretty cool Google Earth style interface too.

If you use the Classic FM app you can listen to shows up to 7 days after they've first been broadcast.

And I listen to the station reasonably frequently and hear the odd piece of videogame music. I've heard pieces from Super Mario Galaxy, Hitman, Final Fantasy, Bioshock, etc. There does seem to be a group who are quite opposed to the idea of them playing videogame music though, and said music featuring in their charts and such. Not sure how a dedicated show will go down. :slol:

That seems a bit close minded. Although I doubt that those kind of people have a favourable view of games.

If something is of a certain genre who cares what medium it came from?

Pretty much this considering their target demographic who probably view mobile phones with fear and suspicion.

Classic FM is very popular with students of the University variety. They've done videogame music shows before; one just before Christmas, in fact. Zelda, Skyrim and Final Fantasy were very prominent. Nothing I really knew though.

I was hoping for a bit of Broken Sword, Uncharted and MGS personally.

I'm excited! :toot: I enjoy hearing video game tracks in the top 100 so having a whole show is a welcome progression. I'll probably use the app to listen to it after it has been broadcast.

Great stuff :) I remember driving home from errands one day and being shocked to hear "And now we'll be playing a Turrican 2 suite" shortly after turning Classic FM on. T'was glorious!

Apparently they are working on an improved listen again feature. If I'm in I'll try and listen.

I wonder if the same people have an issue with movie soundtracks being played?

I've definitely heard people say things like "film and game soundtracks are just entertainment, not real art" or whatever. It's a stupid opinion but there you go.

You just know that there were a few people in 1812 who were whining that this new chap "Beethoven" was all very well for the masses, but he just isn't quality art like classic Mozart.

The word "impressionist" was coined as a slur by art snobs in the 1870s, because the works of Claude Monet weren't considered by them to be proper paintings.

Maybe we are guilty of that sort of snobbery as well and one day people will be laughing at us because we turned our noses up at such classics as "The Only Way is Essex" and "Keeping up with the Kardashians"? ;)
