I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to start topics for those classics of yesteryear especially as the retro section is going the way of the GR equivalent.

Anyway, this is still the best game i have ever played, over ten years after its release and it still provides me with entertainment on the odd time i play it on the Virtual Console.

The graphics are so right and stand the test of time, the music is awesome and the levels are just so mario, its like super mario world in 3d with loads of imagination.

God knows how shigsy pulled this one out of the bag for the n64 launch, it has to be the greatest launch game ever.

What made it even more awesome was the controller and how it perfectly suited the game, even now with the classic controller it does not quite feel the same, the Z button on the n64 controller was positioned perfectly, making manoveures such as the long jump and back flip so effortless and so fun!

Everything was perfect imo, the levels varied, the challenges were perfect and more importantly there were not any frustrating moments in the game imo. The length was also perfect, it had to be completed 100%, something i do not have any motivation on in super mario galaxy!

Yeah, you have to complete it 100%, its one of those games that will never, ever be replicated or beaten, no matter what people say mario sunshine and galaxy are certainly inferior to super mario 64, for its day and even now!

Remove those rose-tinted specs - Galaxy is probably better (Sunshine - not so much). That said 64 is still fantastic.

Playing Mario 64 reminds me of chocolate as I (like many people I'm sure) got it for Christmas. Also like many it was my introduction to the N64 and 3D games. My favourite memories are being stuck for ages trying to catch the rabbit in the basement (I was a retard child) and the music in Dire Dire Docks - especially the bit when the drums kick in. Ooh yeah.

This is going to sound really sad but what-the-hey, I'll continue anyways. Super Mario 64 was the third game I bought for me N64, back in the day (the first being FIFA64 which, despite being absolute cack, still impressed me with teh grafix - my copy was also prone to a weird bug which was absolutely hilarious if you were playing multiplayer with a few beers onboard, namely that the sound would go completely dead for minutes on end only to suddenly cut back in with the cheering crowd noise at random moments, giving the impression that the very serious and fickle crowd were suddenly impressed with your throw-in or something equally as trivial). Anyways, I reluctantly picked up Mario64 after buying FIFA and Wave Race, the reluctance due to the fact that I'd never owned a Nintendo console prior to the N64 and thought that Mario games were just boring, generic platformers. Must have had it for a good week before it finally found its way into the cartridge slot and got played (all the talk in the manual of 'cameras' - a new concept at the time, remember - and the like really put me off) but within seconds of taking control of Mario I distinctly remember having two thoughts: a) 'Oh. My. God. Nothing is ever going to be the same again' (in a videogame-sense, at least), and 2) Just utter disappointment that I had to live in the real world and not the Mushroom Kingdom - a sentiment that may have been acceptable if I were, say, 10 years old, but I was 22. Like I say, a bit sad but there you go. Suffice to say, I've played it through to 100% completion several times since then and it still gets fired up on the Virtual Console from time to time. Definitely my favourite game ever, by some distance.

No exaggeration, first playing this game was simply one of the best moments of my life. I'll never forget hearing Peach's sweet voice reading out her letter and the camera swooping under the bridge in the intro - mindblowing. I was in Mushroom Heaven!

I picked up a N64 two months after launch (when Nintendo changed the launch price from 249.99 to 149.99) , with Super Mario 64 for 20 quid, from a guy standing outside Future Gamer who'd been offered something derisory in 'exchange'. It's RRP was 59.99!

Anyway, as a technical showcase, it was outstanding. And was even at the end of the N64's lifespan one of the best looking games on the platform. Not suffering from the fuzzo-vision and foggy-vision which marred most of the titles on the N64.

However, it really didn't engage me. I played it through to completion, but didn't bother with the stars. Something I'd done religiously in Super Mario World. Which for my money is the best Mario game.

I just watched that video. For the star 'Fall into the caged island' (at about the 5 minute mark) I always used to use the cannon to launch me up there. It look forever trying to get it right and many lost lives. Why didn't anyone tell me there was a strawberry floating owl in the tree?!

I played this for the first time in 2005. Unlike Ocarina of Time however, I didn't really find it too engaging and stopped playing when I got to the lava level.

I preferred Rare's offering of Banjo and Donkey Kong.

That makes me a sad panda. I always liked Mario 64 more than Banjo. I guess I feel the same towards Donkey Kong 64 as you do to Mario 64.

How could I know about the owl. There was nothing to hint that an owl would be living in that tree.

Surely you would have found him, it's standard practice to climb up that tree in order to hop up to the level above.

For shame, DeeDee, you should have known.

This thread has made me happy, so I think I'll download this on the VC sometime. Even though I already have the N64 and DS versions...

Oh, and I'm going to be honest. I didn't know about the damn owl either. :|

 I always took the long way round or did a side jump to the level above. I loaded a new game of this last night just to do that. It was good to finally get that star in less than two tries for once (first time I miss-timed my release from the owl  ). I also used the long jump technique to get from the sleeping Piranna Plant to the elevator that leads to the top of the level with the big boss/fortress. And the side jump then wall kick technique for 'Shoot into the wild blue'.

It's people like us that made the 90s truly hardcore.
