I picked up a few sets of Donkey Konga drums from CEX but the tops are looking a bit grubby. What would be the best way too clean them? My thinking was a slightly damp cloth, but I'm worried about damaging them. Any thoughts?

I got a few sets of those last year and just gave them a wipe down with some antibacterial wipes.

Just scrub them with some soap and then dry them off with an old newspaper.

Actually, you probably don't want to use any kind of harsh chemicals on rubber or any kind of soft plastic.

Try any of the following

Hand soap
Distilled white vinegar
Cidre vinegar
Salt
Lemon juice

Use a wetwipe or kitchen towel and cotton buds for engrained stuff but don't create friction with circular motions or you'll melt the rubber and cause it wear off and ultimately collect more dirt.

If it's melanin (skin stains) or blue (indigo denim) forget about it. Cif might help, but you'll wear down the rubber as the soft outer layer is broken down.

If it's sticky from acidic sweat, you could try neutralising it with sodium bicarbonate (or baking powder) diluted in water, but the rubber has probably already gone through an irreversible chemical change.

Always make sure to wash with plenty of moist towels after cleaning stuff like this so you don't damage the surface with residual chemicals over time. It should smell neutral.
