Renewed for Season 5 which returns 2nd June 2019. Season 8 is the final season, starts 14th May 2023. Split into 2 parts.

Started in the US on 23rd August with a 90min debut episode in a 6 episode first season. Renewed for a 15 episode 2nd season in 2016. UK rights sold to AMC Networks which be available to BT TV/sport customers in HD (BT TV Ch 381) or SD (Sky Ch 192/Freeview Ch 59/BT TV Ch 332) on 31st August. It is also available on Amazon Prime UK.

Living in the same universe as The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and English teacher Travis Manawa have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.

Reviews - Currently 65% on metacritic - http://www.metacritic.com/tv/fear-the-walking-dead

Andy Greenwald

Years of perfectly pierced foreheads and impeccably aimed crossbow bolts have lessened my fear of the walking dead. But I’m absolutely terrified at the thought of seeing these particular people die. So, mission accomplished? Fear the Walking Dead is surprisingly satisfying. I’m just not sure I’ve got the stomach for more.

Vanity Fair

Fear the Walking Dead is not yet a truly frightening show—there aren’t enough zombies yet, for one—but it is certainly unsettling. After a year of Ebola panic, the show’s depiction of an epidemic’s swift spread is chilling. Though, I hope they take an episode or something to show us how the slowly shambling undead, even in big numbers, managed to take down an entire nation armed with machine guns and tanks. I never quite understood that.

New York Post

The first two episodes are creepily suspenseful--they’re great examples of how effective a slow pace and a moody atmosphere can be.

Alan Sepinwall

If Fear is a project with some noble intentions, it has uneven execution, with the prequel nature of it hurting as much as helping.

It's to everyone's credit that they've tried to rethink the formula a bit with the new show, and there are good building blocks in Dickens and Curtis. Maybe by the end of this abbreviated first season, the prequel of it all becomes more valuable.

Tim Goodman

Actual zombies are few and far between in the first two hours, which makes Fear much more of a traditional drama until the spread of the unknown virus really takes hold.

Dramatically the appeal is twofold: seeing what hasn't been shown before — the confusion and then shock and then chaos of the early-days scenario; and, perhaps even more importantly, exploring (and toying with) the notion that viewers know more than the characters in Fear, so watching them be all-too-nonchalant when they should be running for their lives is fun and scary.

Early info -

The cabler announced Monday that it has greenlit the still-untitled offshoot for not one but two seasons, with the first six episode season launching in late summer.

Series creator Robert Kirkman will serve as an exec producer on the offshoot, alongside fellow EPs Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said AMC prez Charlie Collier in a statement. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Added Kirkman: “After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

The untitled Walking Dead spinoff, code name Cobalt, takes place during the same zombie apocalypse depicted on The Walking Dead but in a different location. It revolves around a divorced teacher (Curtis), a good man who tries to do right by everyone in his life, and a female guidance counselor. Curtis, managed by Joe Rice, joins Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey who were recently cast as the woman’s children.

EXCLUSIVE: Gone Girl standout Kim Dickens has been tapped as the female lead opposite Cliff Curtis in the pilot for The Walking Dead companion series at AMC. The project was created by Robert Kirkman, on whose graphic novel The Walking Dead was based, and Dave Erickson, with Adam Davidson set to direct. Dickens landed the female lead after a lengthy casting process, with AMC testing a number of actresses for the role.

The untitled Walking Dead spinoff, code name Cobalt, takes placeduring the same zombie apocalypse depicted in the blockbuster mothership series but in a different location. It revolves around a divorced teacher (Curtis) and a guidance counselor (Dickens), who are working together and are in a relationship. The counselor has two children from a previous marriage, played by Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey. She looks like the girl next door but has a darkness to her, a troubled past that will come back to haunt her.
In addition to David Fincher’s hit thriller Gone Girl, Treme and Deadwood, Dickens recently recurred on FX’s Sons Of Anarchy. She is with Gersh.

Despite rumors of a name circulating, a rep for AMC has confirmed to International Business Times that “Fear the Walking Dead” is the “working title” for the upcoming show. The title -- just like the other project name “Cobalt” -- is simply a temporary title while the project is in development.

In addition, one of the characters in the spinoff will apparently feature in a six-episode arc of The Walking Dead season six.

Leaked early script of the pilot, Spoilers obviously - http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/01/19/ ... ff-script/

Pretty much agreed. It is a bloody awful title.

Guess they want to pull in a massive audience to make sure so they have to shoehorn "The Walking Dead" in the title and tell people that it is based in the same universe.

Surprised by this, kind of like CSI set in different locations. Maybe we'll get a "Walking Dead, UK".

Yes?

I doubt we would get a UK version, but I would love to see it.

Although I am not sure we would be able to tell that there had been a zombie invasion in The Walking Dead: Hull.

See? I'd rather have a spin off series while the actual outbreak is happening and when society descends into chaos. To follow a group of people trying to cope when everything is falling around them. A bit like the start of 'The Last of Us' and that sort of thing that was briefly touched upon at the start of 'World War Z' That's the sort of thing I'd like to see....

AMC’s Walking Dead spinoff officially has a pulse — and a strong one at that.

The cabler announced Monday that it has greenlit the still-untitled offshoot for not one but two seasons, with the first six episode season launching in late summer.

The series, which will be set in Los Angeles, stars Cliff Curtis (Gang Related), Kim Dickens (Deadwood), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm).

“We feel empowered by this two-season commitment, a serious show of faith from our network partner AMC,” exec producer Robert Kirkman said in a statement. “I personally take it as a sign that they believe, like we do, that we’ve accomplished our goal of developing something original that can pay tribute to the original show and expand the world I created while at the same time having something new to say with this story. I’m very grateful that we now have the opportunity to tell this amazing story and show the fans that we really haven’t scratched the surface yet when it comes to The Walking Dead.”

Added AMC prez Charlie Collier: “We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television. From the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out. Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson and their writing team, along with an incomparable set of producers, cast and crew have created something remarkable and clearly distinct. We respectfully follow the request of Monty Python as we bring out (the latest of) our Dead.”

If they can jump into this taking into the account the hard lessons learned during the first few seasons of TWD, this could be quite. Good to see it'll apparently be mostly urban based. And Kim Dickens.

There'll be palm trees, L.A., wandering across vast expanses of nothing mixed up with wandering through quickly desertifying towns.

You could just watch The Colony, it's probably the better show anyway.
