Fed up talking videogames? Why?

i said disease - a lot of collecting tends to be throwing money into something that you then spend little time appreciating or enjoying, in favour of yet more spending and collecting. of course you could say that the money is well spent if you enjoy the actual collecting process but id say then spend your time collecting rocks off the ground and use the money on something more worthwhile.

to note i have and do collect things and the only one i havent regretted is books as i tend to eventually read them :dread:

Possibly depends on what’s being collected but mostly it’s a disease.

I'll give you the same reply I gave my overweight workmates who asked me if I'm obsessed with working out: I can think of worse things to be obsessed with.

In my case it's probably both, i know i'm insane, i've accepted that and just continue to build my various collections anyway.

At the moment it is coins and DP Delft pottery i'm mainly gathering, while in previous years it has been royal china, pokemon cards, Harrods bears, olympic pin badges, and autographs.

Depends.
If it's just trash like old broken stuff, things that pose a hazard, Amiibo, etc then it's a disease.

Collecting games, memorabilia of a band you like or something would be a hobby.

The general consensus tends to be that it is good to have a collection of things but bad to be a collector. I have a games collection but it's tight and I'm happy with it. I used to be a games collector but owning 500 games ain't all that.
That said I do collect the japan only fire emblem trading cards (the art work on them is pretty fantastic), it's a pretty big collection (1000 cards over two binders) but I appreciate having it as I'm a huge fire emblem fan.

as someone with a relatively very large collection of pokemon cards, it's definitely a disease

I'm rather proud of my collection of autographs, here's my film set, though i also have plenty from the music industry, politics, TV, and an absolute ton of F1/motorsport stuff.

I think it can be nice to have a collection of stuff it's when it takes over your life it becomes a problem.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

I tend to become obsessed at collecting and then I quickly loose interest and move onto the next thing, nothing really sticks, but my main large collections of things that I have kept are still in storage at my parents house

I have a record collection, but I'm not 'collecting' records. I just buy albums that are good so I can listen to them. If you have a massive collection of, say, Magic the Gathering cards, but you love playing the game then that is also okay.

If you compulsively buy things for no other reason than to own them, it's a disease.

When I was a youngling I once stuck loads of bogies on the wall next to my bed. Does that count? My mum wasn't best pleased but it was quite an impressive collection.

That's one thing I've never understood. Autograph collecting.

Me either, I just dont get it. I can see the appeal of someone signing something that in itself has value, a game worn jersey, a first edition book, etc, and making the thing more valuable, but someones signature on a piece of paper having value all on its own is very strange to me.

Someone used to do this at my old workplace

Used to collect videogames. Don't have the income for it now. I don't really collect anything bar new neurotic conditions.

Probably a disease, but one I'm happy to have.
