PostCome visit Mauritania, the pearl of Africa!
by Preezy » Wed Jan 10, 2018 3:32 pm

So I was on a random Wikipedia spiral and I stumbled across this country in Africa called Mauritania, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. I like to think my geography game is strong but when it comes to African countries I'm severely lacking. Anyway, some "highlights" of this apparent paradise:

- One of thirteen countries in the world which punishes atheism by death :toot:
- Infant mortality is 60.42 deaths/1,000 live births :toot:
- About 20% of Mauritanians live on less than $1.25 per day :toot:
- At least 4% of the population (155,600 people) are enslaved (what!?) :toot:
- Mauritania was the last country to legally abolish slavery :toot:
- Homosexuality is illegal and is a capital offense :toot:

Whilst we can all live in hope of one day visiting such a utopia, it got me thinking - have any of my fellow forumites been to any seriously horrible countries like this one? It beggars belief that places like this still exist.

It sounds nice because it sounds like Mauritius.

Mauritius is nice because they have Sega music.

I wouldn’t go for a couple of weeks, but it’d be a fascinating place to visit. I read Dom Joly’s “Dark Tourist” book and he visited N Korea, it’s a grim place but I can see why people would go there.

Sounds delightful. :slol:

I've got a friend from Zimbabwe and it sounds like it was a disaster there (she left a few years ago). Now Mugabe's gone things might start improving, but in terms of scummy countries I'd put Zimbabwe up there along with Saudi Arabia, North Korea and any of the backward African countries.

Killing the one subset of people who don't believe in an afterlife just seems overly cruel

Punishments for atheism are so bizarre.

"My God is so POWERFUL that he will do nothing to you and so I will have to kill you on his behalf".

I work with a guy from Zimbabwe who actually makes it sound really nice and interesting. He's lived here for a while but is building a place to move back.

Mauritania was created through a collision of parallel universes commonly know as the Mandela effect. That's also the reason why the moon no longer has a face and New Zealand has moved east of Australia.

Before the universes collided Mauritania was just a big boat.

Wrong.

The Mauritania was a nightclub in Bristol that was infamous for being the best place to “grab a granny” on a Saturday night.

Or so I was told. :shifty:

Not only is atheism punlishable by death but so is apostasy...

https://www.loc.gov/law/help/apostasy/#mauritania

Apostasy is punished under article 306 of the Mauritanian Criminal Code.[47] This article provides that “[a]ny Muslim guilty of the crime of apostasy” is to be given the opportunity to repent within three days. If the accused does not repent within that period, he/she is to be sentenced to death, and all of his/her property shall be confiscated by the government.[48] It appears that article 306 of the Criminal Code also provides that if a person who has been sentenced to death for apostasy repents before his/her execution, the Mauritanian Supreme Court can commute his/her death sentence to a jail sentence of between three months and two years, and a fine of UM5,000–60,000 (approximately US$17–$203).[49]

A young Mauritanian journalist was arrested for apostasy on January 2, 2014, for having posted a text online that was seen as blasphemous.[50] This case has generated a public outcry. Protesters called for the man’s execution, a local businessman declared that he was willing to pay a reward to anyone who killed the journalist,[51] and even the National Human Rights Commission of Mauritania condemned the writings that triggered the arrest.[52]

My girlfriend is from Mauritius it sounds really nice. Massive amount of tax fraud has massively benefited the island. Also that and luxury tourism.
