A bit more on the coronal sun (did a quick Google search before I edit the thread title using some sort of alarmist newspaper title)

It's going well:

The US private Moon mission launched on Monday has run into technical problems.

The Astrobotic company behind the project says its Peregrine spacecraft has experienced an "anomaly" that has stopped it from pointing its solar panels stably at the Sun.

Without the ability to charge batteries and maintain a power supply, the mission won't be able to proceed.

Astrobotic said engineers were working on the issue and will provide updates when it has more information.

Huge ring of galaxies challenges thinking on cosmos

Image

Scientists at the University of Central Lancashire have discovered a gigantic, ring-shaped structure in space.
It is 1.3bn light-years in diameter and appears to be roughly 15 times the size of the Moon in the night sky as seen from Earth.

Named the Big Ring by the astronomers, it is made up of galaxies and galaxy clusters.

They say that it is so big it challenges our understanding of the universe.

It cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is really distant and identifying all the galaxies that make up the bigger structure has taken a lot of time and computing power.

Such large structures should not exist according to one of the guiding principles of astronomy, called the cosmological principle. This states that all matter is spread smoothly across the Universe.

Although stars, planets and galaxies are huge clumps of matter in our eyes, in the context of the size of the universe they are insignificant - and the theory is that much bigger patches of matter should not form.
The Big Ring is by no means the first likely violation of the cosmological principle and so suggests that there is another, yet to be discovered, factor at play.

Hello and thank you for joining us at the BBC's mission control in London - more than 5,000 miles (8,000km) away from where Elon Musk's Starship rocket is set to make its third attempt at launching into the skies.

SpaceX has indicated ahead of this morning's launch that this will be the company’s most ambitious undertaking, as it strives to get the mammoth rocket, which measures 400 ft (122m) when combined with the Super Heavy booster, into lift-off.

It will be the rocket's third test flight, following attempts in April and November last year.

Launch window is expected to open at 1pm GMT, with a 1.10pm liftoff planned.

I watched the launch and there were clear signs of video editing, so I expect Kate’s been at it again.

Hands up who spotted the Northern Lights last night? :D

It's the first time I've seen it. I would have loved to go somewhere more remote to get a better view, but happy to see something by standing outside by home. First time I've ever seen them. :toot:
