I read the issue today, probably the best Fear Itself related issue. You know an event is bad when an epilogue issue written by a totally different writer is the best part of it.

Doctor Doom Series Canned

Back in August, IGN Comics ran the exclusive solicitation for a new mini-series by Nick Spencer and Becky Cloonan called Victor Von Doom, detailing the early days of the once-and-future dictator of Latveria as he battles for his life in Hell. Rumors began to circulate this morning of the title's cancellation on Kabooooom, and now Spencer has confirmed it via Twitter saying, "I see word is out about Victor Von Doom. Trust me, no one is more bummed about this than I am." Issue #1 was scheduled for release on November 30.

This is the second of Spencer's books canceled within a month, the first being Iron Man 2.0, which was canned along with a few other titles after Marvel held a round of layoffs a couple of weeks ago. It's worth noting that Alejandro Arbona, one of Marvel's editors that was let go in their last round of releases, was editor on both Iron Man 2.0 and Victor Von Doom.

:( Was looking forward to this. Not shocked by Iron Man 2.0 being cancelled as well, ridiculous what they did with it. Didn't introduce the new suit till the 3rd issue, then the main baddy was just dropped when Fear Itself happened, and some issues didn't even have Rhodey or War Machine in it at all. Absolute mess :fp:

Looking to get some Ultimate Spider-Man for Christmas. Where do I need to pick up from after the Ultimate Collection Vol. 3?

I was a little bummed about the Teen Doom series being cancelled - thought it could have been interesting.

Are Marvel just into proliferation of titles? I really enjoy some of their titles, but the majority of them are on the sidelines of the main Marvel-U e.g. Daredevil, Punisher (and then I like Punisher Max) - but in their main titles they seem quite happy to have 2, 3 or 4 titles from the same selection of characters. Not sure I'm over fussed in having FF becoming two titles and with Winter Soilder forthcoming there's gonna be 3 titles in the Cap side of things which for me is at least one too many.

Marvel atm seems happy to just go mad on titles on any character that is half popular, see Wolverine. And the Avengers. And the amount of X-Men titles. And those pointless Point 1 issues. And the amount of side stories concerning Fear Itself that ended up fragmenting the overall story and harming the main book.

That's what I'm saying - a title similar to Jonah Hex would never have lasted 70+ issues at Marvel as they have at DC. Still saddens that Captain Britain was put down before its time (and the characters have been in limbo ever since).

I've been pleasantly surprised by All Star Western having not read any Jonah Hex before.

Because they sell. Look at the numbers.

When people stop buying them Marvel will stop publishing them. People bitch and moan about Fear Itself but the sales INCREASED with each issue.

Oh this is so right. But vast quantities of the comic fanbase don't really want diversity. How many people go into the comic shop and will buy anything with an X on the cover. I can think of a fiar few I know in my shop alone. Same with the titles headlined as the Avengers - the title Justice League Dark makes me want to :fp: but you can understand as if this was deemed Shadowpact or something similar it would probably drop 5,000 units. Depressing but true.

I try out everything that Vertigo put out as they have been consistently trying interesting things, but it depresses me that not everyone does try things out. It's great to see Image, Boom et.al trying to put out good diverse comics - but a large number of comic-folk don't give a damn. The fact is 'Batman' outsells 'Detective Comics' irrelevant of the quality of each title as some folk only buy based on the title (and I'm not talking about people buying their first comic at the newsagent I'm talking about people that should know the difference).

The fact that people will buy comics of certain characters irrelevant of whose writing it - really? You are part of the problem. Some of my favourite comics right now are on characters who initially I would have no time for - buying two Punisher titles a month being a prime example of this.

Back to the whole Marvel vs. DC - on average I would say that Marvel has the better roster of talent - Brubaker, Rucka, Hickman, Aaron and now Wood are all top-tier in my book - I just wish they'd embrace more off-kilter titles, where I find a lot of enjoyment. DC on the other hand have IMO a weaker roster of talent and appear to have talent-relation problems (so many of the above list worked for DC first and then went and signed exclusives at Marvel - shows you are doing something wrong) - but DC have allowed smaller titles to flourish and if they are allowed to take credit for the Vertigo universe as well, then that's the reason, month-on-month I find myself buying more DC.

Sadly though the amount of titles coming out of Vertigo seems to have decreased dramatically and established series like DMZ and Northlanders and Scalped are past their halfway points and on the home stretch. What is there to take over? What happened to Vertigo Crime?

This and the fact Constantine and Swamp Thing are now in the mainstream DCU doesn't bode well at all.

This is true. Pissing off Wood so he went over the fence doesn't bode well. I still read Sweet Tooth, Fables, Unwritten, Scalped & American Vampire (for my money the best 'new' Vertigo title - also DMZ I read in trades). I'd really like 'em to have more titles waiting in the wings and part of me hopes that the success of the new 52 leads to Vertigo expanding their line.

Wow marvel are really going to town axing it's fringe titles. Ghost Rider and Black Panther now, how many is that now? X-23 was cancelled the other day and it's possible more could go.

Just read the synopsis of the last year or two of Spider-Man stories. Looks to me like they're building back to the original status-quo with Peter and Mary-Jane, which completely nulls the point of Brand New Day, surely?

Most definitely. Ultimate Spider-Man was designed to be completely accessible to new readers and Ultimate Collection 1 contains the very first two volumes of Ultimate Spider-Man. I convinced Cosmo to buy it and he loved it, bought the next two Ultimate Collections not long after.
